Using GPS on iPhone 3G

just wondered,

when using the navigation on the new 3G iPhone is the screen supposed to stay on? it is a bit annoying when it keeps going into standby mode.

any ideas?

Settings -> General -> Auto Lock off , maybe?

That ^^ took me about 10 miles to get annoyed with it and do it though lol!

Also, does it give you speech commands like tom tom does?

It is not a turn by turn navigation unit.

Probably obvious but does the maps download each time you move around or are there maps installed on the iphone? Just wondered about the usage if I have to download maps each time

It has to DL the maps but the internet usage is unlimited afaik, bar the fair use policy, so I shouldn't worry about the DLing.

I have used mine loads and still only downloaded 85mb in 3 weeks

The only thing that annoys me is when your in a low signal or no signal area and you have a nice blue blip on the radar but a white background because it cant download the maps
