Using HD 1080p?

I'm confused because I normally use DVI @ 1920 x 1080 on my desktop and games, using my 7850. But as my monitor supports HDMI I thought I'd give it a try. When I did my screen was too small and I had to stretch using catalyst control centre which makes it look fine. However my res is at 1080p but my games (Thief and mafia 2 etc ) still say res is at 1920x1080, what gives here? Is 1080p a mode like DVI but you can use a screen res? Sorry for confusion. :)

sorry if I am confused by this line... 1080P and 1920x1080 are the same thing?

1080 is reference to the vertical pixel count... so 1920x1080 is 1080P
