Ive recently set up my new pc with this monitor 24" Asus VS247H Widescreen LED Monitor and iam using the standard lead that was in the box so my question is as i own a HDMi lead would this be better to use and would i recieve a better picture on screen

Better than what? If you're using an analog cable (such as VGA) then yes HDMI is likely to give a better picture. If you're using displayport or DVI then no, it will be exactly the same.

From the product page, the VS247H should come bundled with a DVI cable and a VGA cable.

Presumably you used the DVI cable (as most modern graphics cards don't have a native VGA connector) - and in this case the image quality will be exactly the same as the HDMI. The only benefit of having HDMI is that it can transmit sound - which can be picked up from the 3.5mm stereo output port on the monitor (which doesn't work if you are using DVI or VGA).

If you are using the VGA connection, then yes the image will be slightly sharper with a digital connection like DVI or HDMI, though the difference won't be huge.

If you used HDMI then you would be able to get the sound out of the 3.5mm stereo output on the monitor.

If you already get audio out of a different port (like the ports on your motherboard or a sound card) then it will be of no benefit (other than plugging in headphones easily, perhaps).
