Hey guys, hoping you audiphiles can help me out :)

I wanted to know if I can use the speakers from my hifi with a PC. I assume this is possible, doesn't seem like an especially complicated thing to do, but I don't know much about audio equipment.

I got this hifi a while ago, but most of the stuff it does i dont need anymore (dont use cds anymore etc) That said I really like the sound quality of the speakers. So how could I connect them to my PC without having to use the bulky hifi unit in the middle? I can already output my computer audio to the hifi using the units red and white input connection, but I'd quite like to just have the speakers either side of my monitor, so that my desk looks a lot clearer.

I have this hifi here:

but the problem is that the only wire coming out of each speaker are twin bare copper wires:

What can I do?
Any help is appreciated, thanks everyone :)

You need that amplifier to drive the speakers. Well, an amplifier in general. putting a mini jack on those wires and plugging them into your pc won't work. You might get a very quiet sound from them but not what you're looking for.

Simplest suggestion is to just extend the wires. Hide the base unit somewhere a you're sorted.

mmm okay, thanks. Would it possible and not too expensive to buy a small amplifier that I could just put under the desk? Or can you even get an amplifier that would fit in a standard 5 inch drive bay?

Yeah it would. (not to one actually fitting inside your case..)

But to be totally honest you're probably better off spending the money on an amplifier on something like these

The amps are all built into the sub boxes and they'll take up less space on your desk than those sony speakers. And most amplifiers would be roughly the size of a thick dvd player. So you're not going to be saving space as such.. just changing the shape of the thing you want to get rid of.

You can pick up something like this for about £80

That seems like a lot of unnecessary wiring for something so trivial. But if you like it.

PCI sound cards have pre amps. You still need a powered amplifier to drive those speakers.

I would just use a normal 3.5mm minijack from pc to amp - they usually have line in/md or similar round the back, but I realise you want to save space.
