Using Histograms

This is a function on the camera i haven't really given much thought to until recently. When taking a picture, would you always aim for the graph to be shifted as close to the right, without clipping it as possible? I sometimes wonder how can i get the camera to capture the same light levels as what im seeing in the room.

I often check the histogram on my 20D after taking a pic - it's a very useful feature. I reccomend this article
