Hi all,

Making a trip to Paris next week and looking at using my phone as a sat nav device. Is there a way for me to download google maps before I leave or do I need to buy a separate app e.g. copillot. I know you can cache very small areas, but this seems like a very inefficient way of doing it!

Many thanks

I'm not sure you can. I personally use Sygic of which you can download a weeks trial. Route 66's Navigate 6 you can download and try for 30 days and probably some of the others that are available. Sygic does for me well enough but I dunno if it's the best. I think you can download so much of Google maps to your device but never have myself and doubt you could download enough to cover all the way to Paris.

Ok, thanks. Suppose a trial would do well as I'm not likely to need it again any time soon. Only there for the weekend.

DO you know if there's any limitations to the trial?

With the two mentioned I don't think so. You can download required maps and even traffic is available should you be interested. Not used it myself as *I think* with Sygic some user interaction is required should an indecent along the route occur. Not right good if you are driving.

Try Nav-Free

It's a totally Free 'Offline' sat-nav program! you can download the whole world onto your SD card if you wanted (dunno how big that would be, but I have most of Europe at one point on an 8Gb card and there was still loads of space for music etc..)

It doesn't have Live traffic, but thats usually a 'pay' service plus data anyway!

Google nav really needs a data connection to work properly. I tried caching the maps and getting directions on wifi before using it and it stopped working about half way to my destination when I was in the states. I bought sygic in the end which once I had a small update to stop it bouncing around was pretty good.

I think you are right regards Sygic trial. I use Sygic but never subscribed to Traffic. Any who does use it care to comment on its usefulness? Cheers.
