Using my ASUS DSL-N55U's USB to add backup storage

I thought I'd make use of my modem/router's USB port and add a 2TB storage drive. Going through the manual I keep getting told that I'll be able to copy files via the internet, to make an ftp server and use the AiDisk app?

These things suggest to me that I'll be copying files via my internet connection, which seems utterly pointless. My pc is connected to the modem/router via ethernet cable. I thought I'd simply be able to add the USB device as a network attached drive and have win7 (yep still using it) see it? Then just simply copy files accross via ethernet?

Perhaps I'm not understanding the terminology? Can anyone explain to me how this type of thing, using a router's USB port, is generally done?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
