Are old passports (with the corner cut off) acceptable proof of age for clubs/pubs and stuff?

The passport in question doesn't expire until May, I just renewed it a little early and wanted to use that rather than my new one in case I lose it, 'til my driving licence arrives.
I guess it's down to the particular establishment's, though.
