Using PC as a wireless gateway for xbox 360

Im trying to get my Xbox online by using my pc as a wireless gateway to the internet.

I have had it working in my old flat but cant seem to get it to work this time.

The setup is a Sky netgear router with my pc on a wireless connection and my xbox is wired from my pc. When I tick the box in the wireless connection settings to allow other users to share the internet connection I get an error saying it

"cannot be enabled as a LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing"

I also tried sharing the wired network connection to the xbox but that gives me IP conflicts and cuts off the wireless connection.

What could be stopping this from working I tried everything I can think of Im sure when i had it working before it was straight forward.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)
 
Quick update:

I though it might be because when you shre your connection it sets your pc's IP address to 192.168.0.1 which was the same as the router so i changed the router to 192.168.0.2 but it still gives the same error??? :confused:

Any ideas please.....i need xbox live lol!
 
Bridging the two interfaces should be plenty. ICS is just an extra complication that you don't need just for an Xbox.

I tried that after researching a bit but that just cut off my internet totally :S i have no previous experience of bridging connections though so it may have been me being a Noob.

Like I said ICS worked fine before with no complications which is why it seems strnge that it wont work now.

I have tried setting the LAN connection manually to 192.168.0.2 so that the IP address does not conflict with the router as an alternative after changing the IP address of the router but it still chucks up the same error message.

Looks like i'm gonna have to shell out the £60 on the wireless adapter unless I can sort it PDQ its annoying me now.
 
If he's already got a router then ICS probably isn't going to work very happily.

As Tolien says simply bridging the connections should be more than enough.
 
morguk: Tried all the things on the link to no avail still get the same error although dont think I reset the XBOX network settings so I will try that when I get home.

Werewolf: I tried bridging the two connections previously but it borked my internet access and I had to delete the bridge. Could you please go into slightly more detail about the bridging process? When I had a fiddle about with it I was getting nowhere .

ICS won't work so long as both interfaces are in the same subnet - i.e. the router (and the network card that's connected to it) use 192.168.1.x and the "LAN" side of the ICS setup is the same.

As for bridging, select the two interfaces, select Bridge Connections. That should be it, and if it broke something you'd have to go into more detail.
 
I understand that the Network card on my PC will set itself to 192.168.0.1 automatically when ICS is activated so i changed the router IP address to 192.168.0.2 to counteract this but it still didn't work so tried it the opposite way round that didnt work either :S

Anyway this bridging method sounds easier in theory. Does the Router still assign the IP address to the Xboox using this method rather than the PC?

When I tried it yesterday it cut off my wireless connection and I couldnt reconnect to the network but to be fair i didn't spend a lot of time trying to fix it due to not really knowing what I was doing. Im at work at the moment so will have to try it again later and post my findings.

You'd have to change the router's IP address to something in a different subnet, and reconfigure DHCP on the router accordingly.

Anyway this bridging method sounds easier in theory. Does the Router still assign the IP address to the Xboox using this method rather than the PC?

Yes, though DHCP through the bridging in Windows can be a bit iffy.
 
Ah I see so...If i were to change the IP address of the router to 192.168.1.1 it would work???

Would this affect the other people on the network in any way? Its a shared connection?

They'd get a 192.168.1.x IP from the router if you changed the DHCP settings (or they'd have to change it themselves if they were manually assigning IP addresses), but nothing really changes.
 
Ok, so if i do change it the other people won't have to physically do anything to remain connected to the internet windows will just aquire a new network address as required?

I only say this as I dont want the hassle of the "OMG you broke the internet" calls even though its as easy as pie to fix as i will then get blamed for everything else thats wrong with the world lol.

So long as their machines are set to get an IP automatically and you change the DHCP settings on the router.

Pointless if bridging works though.
 
OK. Will try the bridging thing and post back later.

In relation to the DHCP settings it that the limits of the IP addresses that can be assigned?

e.g 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254

Well the bridging seems to have worked as i can get on live but.......it says my wireless network connection is disconnected on my pc :S yet the internet still works which is bizarre. As I am currently sending this with no internet connection.
