I have a 2.5 160Gb 5400Rpm hard drive in my laptop.

A mate bought one of the 16gb PCMCIA drives for his laptop but it doesn't support it so he offered it to me.

1 - Can i use it as a boot drive. I know its not very big but it would let vista and my usual apps install.

2 - Would it be quicker than paying for a faster hard driver (7200rpm)

3 - Is there any point?

make sure your laptop supports it first (that might be the same reason your mate cant use it!) as i didnt think there were any PCMCIA SSD cards, i have a lexar expresscard/34 SSD, but thats totally different to PCMCIA.

If it works, it should be faster, and more importantly on a laptop, should use less power so should improve your battery life. Have a look in your BIOS first and see if there's an option to boot from PCMCIA card, and failing that, boot from 'other device' and borrow your mates card and see if that works. You might be able to make it bootable by formatting it as a bootable disc, or failing that, with an image of a bootable floppy and mkbt.

Thanks guys. Its an express card slot card and my Dell 1720 has one.

Ive yet to get my hands on it...the only thing is that its only 16Gb. Wish it was 32 then i could use it a my primary driver. I think ill just put vista on it and install everything else elsewhere.
