My main router is Thomson TG585 v7 (FW 8.2.23.0), I've just stumbled upon a spare Netgear DG834G v3 (FW 4.01.40) lying around and now wondering if I can use this to extend my wireless coverage.

Been reading up a little and so far these steps seem to come up:

-Disable DHCP on DG834G
-Disable uPnP on DG834G
-Set same SSID & security options as main router
-Set different channel
-Connect DG834G to TG545 via ethernet
-I'll also be connecting a spare PC to the DG834G via ethernet

Am I missing anything? I'm now reading about the WDS Mode on the netgear and unsure if that's supposed to be used instead of all this.

you may need to set a different default IP address for it if it conflicts with the thompson
eg if dg834g was 192.168.0.1 , login to it first and change this to e.g. 192.168.0.20.

in the futyre then if you needed to loginand change saya wireless setting use 192.168.0.20

If you install the DGTeam firmware, you can set the router mode to bridge mode.

Not sure if the default firmware supports this. IIRC it requires a URL code, which I can't find on Google, but it's possible on the DGTeam firmware with a button.

@encephalopathy,
Thanks, I don't think the Thompson shares the same IP but it's worth changing as you said.

@EVH,
Yeah I was hoping on trying out the DGTeam firmware, but it seems their site/forum has been down for a few days, can't find the fw to download :(
