Using standard cat6a or cat7 cable outside?

All outdoor Ethernet cables I can find look cheap and nasty..

Could I use any of the above cables which seem heavily sheild outside which would obviously be in contact with water and heat from the sun?

No because the jacket still isn't made to be water/UV resistant.

Is the sort of thing you should be using with a polyethylene outer sheath

As above, PVC and LSZH outer sheaths aren't designed for outdoor use. They will degrade over time.

I don't use it but I know quite a few people do. Ridiculously overpriced and tbh I'd rather buy the ludicrous Excel stuff on eBay personally

It's good enough even for 1gb but how long do you think the cable will be? If it's under 100m then it'll be fine.

It doesn't matter what you are streaming, the available bandwidth depends on your network cards/devices. Unless you have anything with 10Gb network cards, then Cat5e is absolutely fine.

Can 10GB routers be expensive? and would you say it's worth it?.... I would be looking to attach all cables to my router directly

I don't think there are any 10Gbps routers? not in the consumer market anyway, 1000Mbps (1Gbps) is more than enough these days. If you want your local network to be 10Gbps then you'll probably want a switch but even then you don't need anything more than a Cat5e cable from the router to the switch.

So I don't know of 10Gb routers either. Since you don't have a 10Gb internet connection this isn't an issue. You'd need to run your internal network at 10Gb which means a 10Gb switch, NICs in all your machines capable of that. You're looking at a fair few thousand pounds.

You won't see one jot of difference compared to a good quality Cat5e cable and decent Gb infrastructure, which hopefully your existing kit supports already.

10Gbe routers tend to be on the shopping list of ISPs. If you're on an 80Mbit (Mbe?) plusnet package that's 0.08Gbe you have absolutely no need for one of those. I use 10Gbe switch and NICs at home but a relatively pedestrian router with my Zen FTTC.

Plus 10GB will saturate the speed of most HDDs, including a lot of SSDs. No point at home really.
