I bought a modem off ebay to replace my hub, but when i set it up it doesnt work and says i need to phone up. i'd prefer not to as they will probably not be happy about me buying one off ebay even if they understand me, is there a way i can set it up myself?

You need to call them and register the modem with them to change it over. Unfortunately its something I would recommend doing as 'alternate ways' could end up voiding your contract and they could cut you off completely.

Its a 5 - 10 min process and shouldn't cost anything in my experience.

There is a good chance VM wont register a modem purchased off of Ebay.
The modem remains property of VM and the seller had no rights to sell it.

They should still do it, its like buying a 3rd party modem to replace your virgin media one.

You're not allowed to do that, you have to use the one they provide. They will refuse to activate it.

This, even if you had a modem before upgrading they pretty much point blank refuse to activate the old one again!

Virgin will only register and allow modems they themselves have supplied to directly to the user be used on the network.

It's partly because the cable network is quite vulnerable to interference if unsuitable/untested hardware is connected, partly because it's the only way they can support the hardware, and partly it's because of security concerns (VM upload a config file to the modem that sets it's speed etc - non vm supplied modems may have security issues, or have been modified).
And that's before you consider that different modems have different limitations - some cant cope with 10mb very well, others can't cope with 20mb very well, some can't cope with 50mb at all...

You can from memory effectively disable the router part of the new superhub so that it just works as a modem, which then lets you hook up a router of your choice to it.

they would have activated it, but they said it was only able to go up to 20mb, so they have fiddled with the hub again. though they did say if it didnt work they would do me a modem if i want
