Using widescreen in portrait?

Does anyone do it? I have a 20" TFT (Samsung 205BW) and a 21" CRT (Sony Trinitron E530). A nice combination - I do photo/video work on the CRT and text/web/email on the TFT. I'm thinking however that when working on HTML and long articles for the website swinging the TFT round into portrait mode, 1050x1680 would be better. 1050 is fine when designing websites for 1024 wide and the 1680 means far less scrolling or in Word, you can easily work on a full page.

Thoughts? Who uses it?

Note the 205BW doesn't rotate so I haven’t really tried it. The ATI drivers will spin the image no problem though.

You can probably just get a new stand for the screen which would allow rotation.

I think it's vesa compliant but could be wrong.

Someone else on here can probably direct you in the direction of a good mount if this is the case.

I am too looking at a similar setup, I have a 22" widescreen TFT at the moment and im looking at getting another to use in portrait mode. Unfortuently there are not many TFT's that have pivot/swivel stands so the only thing is to buy a seperate VESA compatible stand. I am looking at getting a Neo-Flex stand from Ergotron, I have used these where I work and they are brillient as they are height adjustable and they pivot/swivel and tilt.

I've used it with my samsung 226BW.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really work, reason I say that is because of viewing angles, on a TN panel they suck.

The problem comes into play with the vertical (when it's sitting normally) veiwing angles, pivot it 90 degrees and the vertical angle becomes your horizontal, which means tilt your head a few inches to the left or right and the colours starts to go negative and invert, you never get a 100% smooth look across the screen, the effect was pretty awful on my 226BW.

But I say try it first, and see, all you need is something secure to lay the monitor up against (like a wall) while it's on it's side.

I've had my dell 2007wfp in portrait mode several times, and due to the S-IPS viewing angles it works very well. It's very good for web browsing and word, so I imagine web creation would be just as good. I also tried it when I had a Samsung 913B, which was a 5:4 TN panel, and as aob says above, the viewing angles ruin the whole experience sadly.
