Please help. Power on no boot (no beeps either!)

Hi there,

I just finished building my new PC from components. I took real care in putting it together and made sure everything fit properly.

I turn the computer on and there is power (CPU fan and PSU are going), but nothing else happens. I believe this is referred to as a "power on no boot." The problem is there are no beeps from the mother board, so I have no way of knowing what is wrong. I've tried the usual resetting memory, resetting BIOS etc to no avail.

Does this mean the mother board is faulty? Or perhaps the PSU. Any advice or help would be most appreciated.

Thank you

Not sure if youve done this but try taking out all of the ram. see if it beeps. Then put in 1 stick and see what happens. Also try using the power on button on the motherboard and see if the psu and fans power up. This will tell you if there is any power getting to the board.

What board have you got, there is a 4/8 pin power connector by the cpu, this supplies power to the cpu.

Try a CMOS reset sometimes this has worked for me.

Best procedure is always to check both 20/24 pin atx connector is attached and the 4/8 pin to the motherboard. Then reseat ram and graphics card and also remove anything not needed to post e.g. soundcards/tvcards, even remove usb/audio headers.

Test with another PSU if you have one, along with bios reset. If still no joy strip pc, and build it on your table and see if it works there.

Check speaker is plugged in correctly also for bios beep codes, but since there are none it does sound like a motherboard fault rather than anything else.

It's not an Asus by any chance is it, their latest diagnostic card sucks, their boards don't beep as the manual says they should either.

But from my experiance with Asus boards, if the board is ok and so is the CPU , it's normally the memory.

To eliminate this, try 1 stick only in slot one, and replace till you find the offending stick.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I only have access to the Internet at the Net Cafe.

I tried with and without memory and there are no beeps on either scenario. The CPU and PSU fans always start up.

Hi,

This is the MB:

Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2 GeForce 6100 Socket AM2 onboard VGA 6 channel audio mATX Motherboard

Tried a BIOS reset by taking out battery and doing jumper. Neither worked.

I've removed everything and at one point I just had the motherboard, PSU, power button, internal speaker and CPU attached. I even left the memory out on one test (the initial boot screen should at least start up without memory, right?).

I am 90% sure it's either the PSU or Motherboard at fault here. I think it's the PSU because when I first built it and had everything plugged in then the CPU fan was going a bit slow... When I had everything unplugged (apart from the raw components) then the CPU fan was fine. I think it's the motherboard because of the no beeps.

Either way it is so annoying to have this happen on a new build. Feels like a load of money just went down the toilet or summit

Have you got access to another PSU? If you've narrowed everything down to the Mono and PSU then theres only so much you can do. Are you using the motherboard risers? :p
