Hi guys,

Can anyone help me with utangle. All i want to do is monitor what sites people go on and i am told utangle would be the best free way of doing this.

I have got it set up with my nics going into a unmanaged switch with a static IP. I have this running in bridge mode as our firewalls etc are controlled by our ISP.

I am able to get onto the web interface and ping my servers from utangle but it will not monitor the network. Am i being thick here?

Thanks.

I thought the connections had to go through it, firewall to your untangle then into your switch.

I've not used it but it I would think it would work like that.

According to the docs you can set it up in bridge mode but I doubt you'll be able to do so on an unmanaged switch. You will need a switch that can have multiple clans. The firewalls will be in one vlan and the other NICs in another. Untangle would then be set up to bridge between the two.

Thanks for replying guys.

I think i understand now.

I need to put the 'external' lead into the first switch coming into the building, then put the 'internal' cable from utangle box into the unmanaged switch which connected the first switch before?

Unfortunately i thought that this would not cause any network downtime. Maybe i need a different solution?

Any ideas? I only need to monitor 1-5 computers.

Cheers

What are you trying to achieve and why? If it's genuinely just a case of wanting to collect site usage data then consider a proxy and loging or if you aren't that bothered about the specifics then the DNS server will log DNS requests if that's going to give you the level of detail you want?

I couldn't get pfsense onto the device I'm using - It's a big ask that needs at least 4-5 hours work :/

However I managed to get untangle on it .... not liking the mickey mouse menus but seems very feature rich.

How are you guys getting on with it ?
