Utilising a 4k TV with ultrawide to maintain FPS

Is it possible/easy to maintain 60fps if you switch resolution slightly by adding black bars to your titles.

I game on a 65 inch screen. So say I had a 1080ti which was getting 45fps on a game at 4k. Is it possible to custom resolution it to ultrawide and then play with it at 60fps?

Is this easy to do or difficult or does it depend on game support?

Thanks. :)

No sadly it doesn't. I don't want more frames persay, I just want to be able to hit 60 frames a second.

I tried a custom resolution via NVIDIA control panel but at 60hz, the TV panasonic dx 902b doesnt seem to pickup the signal.

If I'm close to 60fps on most games, I'm just thinking if i add some blackbars and decrease the demand on the GPU a bit, I'll hit it nicely with just some vertical resolution lost .. (basically ultrawide theory).

Is there a way to do this or make games do this?

Best bet might just be to go with medium/high settings on the 1080ti. It wont look much worse and will be much higher quality than if you try to downscale the resolution.

Also using superwide will give you the bars along the top and bottom as you want since there is less verticle pixels, however, detail will get chopped off from the sides since superwide also has more pixels horizontally.

I dont mind losing vertical resolution as the FOV is so cool.

Oh damn so a plan of ultrawide gaming is out of the window on a 65 inch TV... :(

UW is just an aspect ratio. I dont see any reason why you couldnt use a custom resolution of say, 3840x1644. If you create that resolution and set the gpu to do the scaling, that should let you run a UW ratio on a 4k panel and keep 1:1 pixel mapping.

I actually didn't realise that the big ultra wide actually has less pixels horizontally than standard widescreen 4k so ignore what I said. I still think it's best just to turn down settings a notch though. It shouldn't take much to get 60fps with a 1080ti.

Thats what I thought. It only gives me the option of 30hz with that custom resolution which confuses me. How do I enable the GPU to do the scaling?

I can get it working with GPU scaling to the 30hz ultrawide resolution but then I can't get it working in-games.

In-games I only get the 30hz option unless I run a borderless window?

Fixed it guys, Only the HDMI port allows 60hz. I had it connected via display with HDMI converter.

I think its a great way to save some FPS. I've been playing Skyrim with an ENB which actually adds black borders.. so I've been paying all that FPS for nothing hahah.

Try Doom at night (and turn up the FOV), it's so freaking awesome! Having the extra real estate of the TV with ultra-wide really helps it, I don't like the UW monitors precisely because they're too small and end up as too short, feels like I'm squinting.

I agree with the above poster! How far away was the monitor?

I'm really fancying a 75inch TV now now this ultrawide hack is-able.

Honestly thing it would be the ultimate big screen experience whilst dodging the 4k demands...

Just use mine at 4k and tune the settings to 60hz. At a distance then settings don’t really matter all that much and still looks far better than my monitor does with ultra settings.

Haven’t tried my OLED at 21:9 but might do later :).

I’ve been gaming @ 3840*1440 on my 55” tv just lately and loving it. It’s like I have a massive super wide display for gaming. I measured the diagonal and it’s 51” so it’s a lot bigger than those 34” superwides you can get

For desktop and video Use etc I use the full 4K picture. But I found it just felt a bit too sluggish using the full 4K for gaming, and my kills where suffering

I’m as happy as I was when using a 2560*1440 - 144hz monitor. Maybe even a bit more so. The extra situational awareness is great. I’m getting just as many kills using the 4K monitor @ 3840*1440. I might have to try 3840*1600 if that is 1.1 pixel mapping. I thought 1440p was though to be honest

My only regret though is not saving up enough for one of those new Samsung sets that can do 3840*1440p at 120hz
That would have been the best of both worlds

I don’t think you really look at the area that’s in the black bars anyway when gaming at the full 4K. I tend to look left and right. But not up and down. I don’t miss it anyway when gaming at 1440p

To me its almost like watching a film with the black bars.. I really like it. I think I got addicted to it from the Rudy ENB on Skyrim.

Granted I still just use the entire screen for now because my rift is attached to the hdmi port for now but its definitely a nice option to know that you can save a bit of FPS by switching resolution and it looks somewhat better in a lot of ways.

i do think part of this ultrawide craze is just the simple fact ppl want bigger displays..
