Am trying to make the switch over to a Macbook and am liking it so far! I am trying to test a USB drive for bad sectors etc before I commit to using it as I suspect it is dodgy, how can I check this on a mac? On my PC I would use HD Tune and run an error scan aswell as check the SMART status but on Mac I don't know where to start!

Disk Utility.

Spotlight (magnifying glass top right) and search for it, or it can be found in Applications/Utilities.

Check the SMART status by alt-clicking on the HDD name, and selecting 'Information'.

'First Aid' is the tab you need to check for bad sectors, etc. Click "Verify Disk" and it'll work its magic (and offer you Repair Disk if necessary).
