uTorrent Upload/Download Speeds

I'm using uTorrent and if I give it unlimited upload speed, it absolutely kills my net connection so that it becomes unusable. So, I have set a limit as to how much can be uploaded at once, but this also makes my download speeds drop significantly. The download speed setting is still set as unlimited.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks,

Michael.

Whats your upload speed limited to? I reckon 50Kb/s is a good compromise for upload. It returns 1.2Mb/s download on a well seeded torrent for me.

I've set it to 5kB/s. But what I don't get is why the upload speed option has an affect on download speeds, when there is a separate option for download speed.

Set it to 6KBps, iirc, <5KBps upload on uTorrent results in a 30KBps download cap.

6KBps should give you unlimited download rates.

Try reducing the number of connections (preferences -> bittorrent). Also reduce the number of active torrents. I usually just have one torrent active at a time.

Torrents work by 'Sharing' The more you give the more you recieve!

Exactly, it encourages people not to grab the torrent and bugger off without uploading anything.

I usually find 10 or so K/Bs off my max upload allows me to browse without any problems/slowdown

Your client needs to send TCP acknowledgements and requests which take up a fair % of bandwidth, if your upload is completely saturated this can't happen and so your download speeds suffer.
