uTorrent won't install

I've just downloaded the 1.8.5 version of uTorrent. The install process goes OK until I have to click the 'Install' button. When I press that nothing happens apart from the desktop appearing to refresh. I ran uTorrent again as an administrator and no change. :confused:

Wierd! Were you installing over a previous version? Did you try and remove it first or just install over the top?

Perhaps removing it and then going through any registry entries for uTorrent and removing then and a final install might work?

I have the new version on w7 64b and had no problems...

I copied the uTorrent exe to the current uTorrent folder and ran that. Is that bad?

Hmm just ran the installer from another location and it worked. I take it this is like a circular reference in Excel? I was running an installer in the same place the installer was trying to install to.

yes that was bad. Uninstall old, install new.

I never uninstall uTorrent. I always install over it. :cool:

I just didn't realise I had to install from another directory.

Doesn't uTorrent have an update feature built in?

I think its just an update checker, i.e. tells you if there is a newer version available or not.

If I do a new install when I put windows 7 on, how will i backup all my torrent info so I don't lose my share rating? I know I'll still have the files but utorrent wont?

Isn't the torrent info stored in the actual torrent files? Either that or since a new uTorrent will just update the executable any settings/profiles files should stay as they were.

you can backup your current torrent files from %appdata%\utorrent. backup your data also. then add them to a clean install to resume any partially downloaded torrents or to continue seeding.

the ratio stats it displays are irrelevant because private trackers will keep record of that. and public trackers? doesn't matter.

It will install the new version by itself too. IIRC I had to go through a 2-3 page wizard to update mine recently. I haven't installed a fresh copy of uTorrent manually for a while on this computer and I am running the latest version!

EDIT: It also preserved all my torrents/settings too.
