I am trying to download openoffice which is BitTorrent released. I have just installed Utorrent on Vista following the FAQ on the utorrent website. I have a 2mb connection via a router connected via the pcs ethernet port. What connection speed should I expect on downloads because the average download rate is 13k/sec, which is a bit low no?

I have configured my router is accept port forwarding, which has passed the utorrent tests.

So even though there are a load of peers, do you think my ISP is limiting bit torrent downloads. I am with Tiscali btw.

i would think that your ISP is throttling because a connection to the open office torrents will max out your connection

Have you enabled encryption (enabled or forced)

Well there is your answer. :p

Tiscali throttle connections. Apart from enabling encryption there is nothing else you can do short of getting it from a website.

Aren't Tiscali one of the worst ISP's for downloading torrents etc? I certainly wouldn't touch them with a barge-pole, and I think the "unlimited downloads" that they advertise is nothing short of scandalous, considering their somewhat draconian "fair usage" policy.

It's exactly the reason why I pay for a quality ISP like IDNet... i'm on a 2MB fixed line and it's always running at full speed. The 30GB cap certainly doesn't affect me. :)

According to here they do: http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=tiscali

People are also saying if you want out before the 12months is up to abuse your connection and after 3 strikes they offer you a mac. :p

Been downloading over night and I reached speeds of 190KB/sec! So they defo cap it during the day.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for. If I moved to an uncapped equil its and extra £10-20 a month. I prefer to wait a little longer for my download :)

They do cap it during the day, you can only use p2p after about 1am on Tosscali till about 8am, then its back to about 20k as they have a different set of Traffic Shaping hrs to their FUP hrs, when i was on Tosscali their peak hrs were from 6pm till 12pm, and their shaping hrs were from 8am till 1am, which is a complete joke as most of the off peak hrs of the FUP are inside the shaping hrs, so if anyone is wondering why they get about 20k off peak, thats why. :)

not for me they dont.
why do you keep trying to say this?
you must be the ONLY satisfied Tiscali user
either that or you don't play online games, or download anything, or use bittorrent or do ANYTHING with your connection other than spam the forums with "Tiscali are brilliant!".

nope, 56GB downloaded via BT since the start of Jan. Scheduler set to stop downloading between 6-11, a good torrent will max out the line no problem.

Tiscali will have one of those limiting fair use policies which throttles everything during the day...also with utorrent make sure you move it to a non torrent port aswell as encrypting the packets
