So you may or may not know my 390x died.
OCUK has given me £270 back to replace it. Which I thought was a fair price. Only thing is, ocuk no longer stock the strix or the MSI 390x.

GPU prices have been up and down like a yoyo recently and I really don't know what to do. Its further confused because I currently game at 1080p. But I am putting away 100£ a month, so that hopefully at the end of the year or early next year I could get a 1440p ultra wide and something like a 1080Ti. I currently only have 200quid saved up. But would have 700quid by the end of the year (plus a couple other hundred from odd jobs).

So, really I'm confused. I want to buy from OCUK because they did me a solid with the refund. But they don't have any 390x that I like. (aesthetics very important to me). I don't want to get a 480 because I see it as a downgrade. (and will be a while before AIB). I've considered getting a 980ti or 1070 but that will take some money from my saving pot and is it a bit overkill for 1080p?

Dont know what to do.
 
1070 or 980Ti i reckon. Most certainly not overkill for 1080p gaming ( if you like to play with max settings).
 
From what i've seen you can't go wrong with the 980Ti.
1070 stocks seem to be all over the place depending on which partner you want.
980 has similar performance to the 390 right? Maybe that could tide you over.
 
980Ti for sure. Going rather cheap now and will be quite a bit faster than your 390x.

Can get a 980Ti for £360 now for the strix models . Bargain at that price.
 
I would think about today (once you get a 1440p+ monitor you'll think about a suitable card): AIB 480 or hold on another week and see what the 1060 brings to the table.

Wouldn't get a 1070 for 1080p, you'd be sitting with it at 50/60% usage with Vsync and that's just a waste.
 
IMO between the 980Ti and 1070, moving forward the 1070 would be a better bet.

Just think back about the release of 970 and the 780Ti became EOL back then...initially the 780Ti was still quite a bit faster than the 970 and 290 series, but from that point onward any new releases after the 780Ti became EOL, the performance drop further and further behind both cards, due to Nvidia shifted the resource for optimisation for new titles focusing on new gen cards (that makes them money) instead of EOL cards that are discontinue and not longer on sale.

For games there were released before the release of the new gen card, the 980Ti would most probably performance no worse than it original was; but for new and upcoming titles, it simply won't have the same level of performance that you would expect of what you think the 980Ti would deliver.
 
Wait for the 1060 to come out and see what that brings to the table, and by then the custom 480's might be out, and they might be much better than the reference models.
 
I've been in the same boat but with a borrowed graphics card,i waited for the 480 and wasn't the performance I wanted and I ended up getting a 1070 (arriving today), I personally wouldn't go with old tech espically nividia as they are known for not supporting there older tech,the 1070 is new and will only get better as time goes by were the opposite can be said about the 980ti is a quick fix however one I feel you won't be happy with later down the line.

Well that's how I felt anyway,i didn't wanna pay the price but with nothing else competing what can you do!.

Also gsync monitors aren't terrible prices (they are more expensive) I've picked one up on overclockers for £260 delivered (24" 144hz 1080p gysnc Asus predator).

Hope you don't struggle with the choice too much ,I did and became silly the amount of time I was spending looking everything up and waiting for things to release ,just finally glad I pulled the trigger.
 
For 1080p I would probably grab a 980Ti. I would usually say go for a 1070, but new 980Tis from OcUK at £360 is quite a steal at 1080p. They used to be pushing 980s at those prices on offer.

To be fair, even if the 1070 gets better optimisation in newer games and pulls away from the 980Ti you will still be hard pressed to suffer at 1080p. If you were at 1440p I would suggest you get a 1070 to extract a bit more as NVIDIA optimise Pascal. 1060 is a side/downgrade from a 390x so not really much point.
 
I've decided I'm just going to get another 390x. I was happy with my old one at 1080p and think it's the way to go. for ~£260 Im getting faster than 980/480 performance and I don't have to change any drivers or anything.

Only has to last 8 months at the most.
