utterly useless tyre fitters

A friend of mine picked up a bit of a banger and it has 1 directional tyre and 1 non-directional on the front.

The car pulls to 1 side, even after tracking etc has been done and the garage said it was because of the different tyres.

Is that true, would it make the car do that?

Do they even make non-directional tyres any more? May be worth looking how old it is and replacing it anyway, you can usually decipher the age from a serial number or look for hardening or cracking of the sidewall.. AFAIK tyres over a certain age are no longer able to be sold anymore , rubber deteriorates over time.

It shouldn't require so much trial and error in order to find a garage/fitter that you trust but it does seem to, when it comes to the motor trade :(

I used Event Tyres recently and I couldn't have been happier with the service and the way the guy worked, and treated my wheels. He seemed very knowledgeable. I can only hope he's still working for the franchise in this area when I next need some tyres :p

Equally I've used event in the past and the guy fitted the wrong tyre, same make but lower model, then tried to fob me off that there was no difference, why is the eco contact cheaper than the premium contact then?.. What about the speed ratings, the load ratings? Silence.. Followed by, what do you want me to do, I'll give you a discount (which worked out the same price as an eco contact anyway, so no discount!

I refused to pay him and had him refit my old tyres and went elsewhere.

Been using a small local independent fitters that a friend works at since I passed my test. Always careful, actually uses a torque wrench and takes pride in what he does.

Although these days I just take the wheels off the car and take those and my new tyres down, most fitters can't compete with the likes of Camskill on price and doing it this way he charges me £5 a corner for fitting and balancing

A good mate of mine runs his familys Tyre & Exhaust Centre in town so I have no issues at all.

My Tip would be to find a family run business that rely on there reputation rather than one of these chains like Kwitfit etc that just chuck up a Big unit in town & advertise everywhere.

The kwikfit near my work is fine. Quick, and very helpful. Even checked my tyres a while ago, found a little nail thing stuck in it (not penetrating). Took it out, checked the pressures etc. All for free and was on my way in 15 mins.

I don't think you can judge a whole brand, just check whats available in your area.

The only place I have found to be decent is a tyre place in Acton called eagle tyres. I have tried some backstreet place near my house and I had to go back after a puncture repair because the plum forgot to balance the tyre. Only found out a week later on the motor way when all my organs felt as if they are being centrifuged.
