Finally had a chance to give my Nikon D7000 and Tamron 70-300 VC USD f4-5.6 lens a proper run out.

Overall I'm happy. I'm not nailing focus though.

I also had an attempt at panning today. Finding it a struggle to get the subject in reasonable focus though.

My exposures are still inconsistent but that's likely my fault rather than the cameras.

care to share pics?

I did post some but wasn't really happy with them.

Think I prefer the tight crops.

Also, what type of shutter speeds are best for panning? The following is 1/30s but I've not enough of the jockey and horse in focus.

I've not really had any experience with more modern AF systems but I've always found easier to put it in single point mode (centre) when panning.

It depends entirely on the length you're using, and the speeds involved. I find generally starting at four times the rule of thumb recommended shutter speed e.g. 1/12 at 50mm equivalent, 1/80 for 300mm equivalent, that tends to give a manageable amount of blurring and you can go either way from there. Obviously with faster subject speeds at the same distance, you'll want slightly faster shutter speeds.

Thanks for the advice.

The first photo was taken at 1/160 whilst the bottom one was at 1/30sec. I think that 1/160 is much nearer what I should be using. I'm quite happy with the amount of sharpness in horse and jockey and the slight blur in the legs.

I'll try again on Thursday.

Went to 'Ladies Day' at Uttoxeter today. Not really happy with the amount of keepers I got from around 700 shots. :(

I still have issues with underexposure despite the camera telling me I have good exposure.
