there isnt a massive amount in it to be honest. LED's have the advantage of being able to be put anywhere. cold cathodes can be a bitch to fit in some cases and just get in the way.
LEDs can also be directed at what you want to glow and cathodes are more general and create a more ambient light. so i suppose its down to what you want to glow and where it is in the case.
also cathodes have an annoying dc-ac converter that you have to hide somewhere and usually the lead from the converter to the cathode is short.
