Well it's arrived at my local shel... and it's another 1p more a litre than Optimax was.

I think these performance fuels are a good thing for performance cars, but where will motorists draw the line and say they are getting too expensive compared to ordinary unleaded

To fill my car with normal unleaded at todays price of 91.9p it would cost me £64.33. To fill the same tank with V-Power it would cost £69.23; almost £5 more

Hmm

For £5 more I couldnt care less TBH. I probably use 2-3 tanks a month and £15 extra a month is nothing. I'd pay £10-£15 a tank extra if I had to or it was some 100 RON stuff. I wouldnt consider paying £2.50 a litre for the BP stuff though

That's £180 a year at your lower milage costs. That's the price of a years tax, I bet you feel the sting when you come to buy that?

Not really, I spend vastly more than that modding the car. Its a cost I would rather not pay given the choice (the tax that is) but in reality its not a problem. If £180 was a problem then I wouldnt be running a performance car.

hmm but if his car can use the extra octane rating then the extra mpg may offset the cost of V power.

from the owners club, they have worked out that at 17" ignition timing, unless optimax/vpower over something like 15p more expensive than standard, then it is worth it to go with the Higher Octane stuff.

put 12 squids worth in myself yesterday @ (98.9p), used most of it within the hour lol. (i dont have my ignition advanced yet...but it should improve things a little...)

Just thought, the V Power I got the other day was the same price as Optimax, are you sure the price difference wasnt just the natural price variance ?

i thought V-power and Optimax where the same thing?

Also here we have V-power and V-power racing. Is it the same in the uk?

No, at my local station Optimax was always 6p a litre more, now the difference is 7p. Perhaps that might change back in time.

I personally don't mind too much as I don't have to use it, the Saab adapts to whatever is used between 91 and 98 ron. I'm just curious if jap owners drive onto the forecourts, see the petrol is almost £1 a litre and happily fill up.

I know when I owned my Pulsar it bugged me, especially considering the fuel economy of such cars.

We don't happily fill up, but my car is mapped for 99RON (Tesco's at the time) and so V-Power it is. If you need it, you'll pay for it, and if don't need it then don't bother.

My bike seems to like it, only the best for my baby, its not that much dearer than normal stuff, especialy on a £14 tank. I used to trat the focus every now and again to a tank, (not that it made much difference but I loved that car :) ).
You wouldent catch me putting it in the corsa mind!

Optimax was 98RON, V-Power is 99-RON and has some friction-reduction stuff in it (this is according to the marketing blurb).

I've been quite interested in these posts about fuel grade and the war of supermarket Vs forecourt however I'm a bit of a n00b at cars and I've always wondered...

The handbook to my car say it is designed to run on 95 or 98RON fuel, but looking around BP ultimate is 97RON, tesco and V-power is 99RON, does this mean I can't use them at all or would the engine accept it?

any info would be useful
Thanx

I don't resent paying the extra for SUL, as I seem to get better overall fuel economy when using optimax despite the higher initial cost.

well depending on what car you have it might not make any difference but it certainly won't damage it.

What car is it?

BP ultimate is always at least 97, often its closer to 98. I can certainly tell the difference between Esso 97 and ultimate. The S2000 needs 98ron for maximum power. Also it made 245hp on Ultimate, std of 237

I got a citroen saxo, aint tried anything like BP ultimate in it yet as its currently 105p per litre LOL

I was in shell last week and an chinese taxi driver was asking "why is fuel 98p litre this week but 92p last week?"

The checkout lady said "fluctations"

The man stormed out, got to the door turned around, stuck his finger up and shouted "**** you british too"
