V5 - how long + New question

Ok, so I'm in the process of purchasing a vehicle.

It's currently on a private plate, which the owner wants to retain. The owner went to the DVLA last week to put the plate on retention, and to have a standard plate issued.

Obviously, I don't want to be buying a car without the V5 certificate. How long should it be before the V5 comes back? It was all done in a main DVLA office, not via post.

I know it states up to 4-6 weeks on the website, but was wondering about personal experience?

I swapped a plate and it took around 7 working days I think by me doing via a DVLA office (as opposed to posting it off).

So long as you see that the new V5 is sent off or used with your details you shouldn't have any issues.

Yes. Received back updated V5, current MOT and Tax disc with new details. Both were my cars though. Basically I did all the forms and whatever with the lady at the office then she applied for new V5 etc which came by post like you normally would. I'm sure they said it would be around 2 weeks at the time (12 months ago).

I don't think there is going to be any issues, however the V5 has been sent away surely at the office in order to get a new one issued with standard plates on it?

So I have to wait until the full V5 has come back with the amended details on it.

Thats a pretty good turn around time... heres hoping for such a short wait with this one.

Well I've had to deal with 5 V5s in the past year and none took more than 2 weeks and one actually came back in a week. If you know the document reference you can always phone or email and chase it up.

Another quick question :

The guy selling the car works away during the week. The only time I'm likely to get to it is during the week. I've been speaking with his Dad, who is happy to do the changeover/payment etc, but with the owner having already signed the V5 for me.

Is this dodgy?

Can anyone advise re. this?

Shouldn't be an issue really, I've sold a car for my mum and had her sign it the morning before they came to pick it up as she was gonna be at work.
