V5 logbook - does registering new keeper = ££££?

As title - I may need to be become the registered keeper of my dad's car when I borrow it, for insurance reasons. Will this cost me anything to send off? I know little about selling cars and my Google-Fu is weak tonight

I will be phoning up to double-check with a different person before I do anything. But from what I was told, I cannot be the 'main' driver of a car if I am not the registered keeper (DirectLine). Now this does seem very silly to me as surely there must be many situations when this isn't the case (company cars, for example), so I'm looking into the other options just in case. I'm not keen on being a named driver because my (admittedly small) no claims will vanish, plus isn't it illegalish if I'm doing most of the miles? and the car will still be owned by my Dad - and he doesn't mind the added registered keeper on the V5.

I would say too many owners can devalue the car.

Well yes - but as I've said, the monetary owner doesn't mind. To be fair, he's had it since new and another owner (or two) probably isn't going to make much price difference a couple (or more) years down the line when it finally gets sold.

Have you tried a different insurance company? It's not the same for all.

Directline are cheaper than comparison sites at least - and I have named driver no claims with them, and if I swap part way through a policy (which I will be doing), I'll have cancellation fees and won't finish building up my proper driver no claims (1st year). I think I'll be sticking with them

OK, a little update. I booked my insurance a week or so ago to change to my Dad's car and they didn't mention anything about me not being the registered keeper, so I left it at that.

However, I phoned them up tonight and the woman said I need to be the registered keeper, and checked with her supervisor when I queried - that it's a legal requirement for the insurance to be in the registered keeper's name? Company cars excepted as they go under "company car insurance".

I'm on the phone atm for any prompt repliers with any seeking questions I should be asking? Edit: Too late

Not true, ask them to name the act.

Literally just got off the phone with them again to clarify something, popped the question again, got a slightly different response -

Dad can be registered keeper and give me the car but I cannot be registered keeper and give him the car

She didn't mention legalities, she started off saying I needed to be registered keeper then said the above - in other words, it's ok for your parent to be the registered keeper but anyone else becomes a problem. I'd chase it up further with them but I don't want to upset the applecart now I've got a result I'm happy with!

Owner didn't matter, just registered keeper they were worried about. Like I said though, I'm not going to risk upsetting the apple cart
