The boss (wife) has decided that she likes the above mentioned cars.

I have £3k tops to spend on a car but less is better for obvious reasons.

I have seen a 2006 (06) v70 D5 (160k miles) with FSH for £2600

or

2004 (54) xc70 2.5 T (125k miles) FSH for £1975

Both seem okay. We do about 8k miles per year mostly local with 5 trips a year to visit family. So no real need for the diesel but coming from a 1.6 petrol that gets us 37 MPG the drop to probably high 20's will be noticed.

Am i being mad and should just stick with an MPV...

I can't tell you about the car itself, but it's the same engine as the mondeo/focus its a 200kg heavier car.

Expect 17-22 round town, 35 on the motorway (prob less as its an auto)
^^forgot to add, those are for the 2.5t

I'm certainly no expert but my gut feeling is that V70 seems pretty expensive for what it is, especially for the miles its done.
£1,600 volvo

I don't know if V70s have issues (e.g. rust) that four extra years are going make a lot worse, but if not at this age you're buying on condition and this looks alright from pictures...

The newer one has more powerful version of the D5 engine (185 vs 163bhp) and is higher emissions/fuel consumption/VED licence, so I would be going with the older version with lower mileage myself.

The T5 will drop into teens MPG if you drive it in a spirited fashion.
