This has me stumped

Vacuum cleaner is gradually working in less and less sockets in the house.
Don't think any other appliances have this problem and sockets still work with other appliances

Once it stops working in a socket it only sometimes starts again.

I can't even think if it's vacuum or something in the house.

Anyone have any ideas of the cause?

Only thing I can think that places that much load on a socket is the kettle. This doesn't have any problems.

Sounds like poor connections on the back of the socket rather than a problem with the Hover. Does the power trip out?

If every other appliance works fine in the sockets used, but the vacuum is hit and miss it points towards a problem with that appliance.

Check the pins on the plug, also check the length of the cable for any damage. It could even be that the pins just ain't making contact properly with the make of sockets in your house. I know my 110v Transformer has this issue when used on certain sockets, but those sockets are perfectly ok.

Vacuum has probably the highest power consumption out of anything. therefore discount the fact that other things work.

One thing that gets me is why it would work in some sockets and not others?

I will check for loose plug wire

Check for intermittent connection where the wire exits the Hoover, that's the bit that undergoes the most flexing (and mine is failing there too)

Or like Dis86 points out, some loading issue.

Take the plug off, inspect.
Repair or replace plug.

This really needs a thread??

edit: it may be a broken wire in the vacuum flex.

Edit

Figured it out.

Since some plugs bend the wire in a certain way it is indeed a loose connection.
Very coincidental that the thing never cuts out despite being moved around when it's a loose wire
