VAG-COM

There always used to be a VAG com users forum over at UK-mkivs. Post on there and someone will help you out for a beer, assuming it still exists that is!

I have the cable, not sure I can find the software though.. what is it you want doing?

I've got the Emmisions Warning Light on and have already shelled out for a new pump as that's what the garage was saying the problem could be.

Just hoping to pin point the actual problem and get it fixed!

have a look on for forums on seatcupra.net, seats are VW's but cheaper, and they do have meets regualrly, so a decent chance theres someone there, or a meet you could go to to get someone to have a look

Or try briskoda.net :)

Thanks guys, I've got the guy from the garage over on Friday with his laptop so hopefully I'll have an idea!

Are you able to sell VAG-COM? If I where to buy it for this task could I sell it on once I've used it?

You can sell the cable after you have used it. Depending on which one you get, I would be interested in purchasing it afterwards. :)

They are quite expensive though.

You can buy the cables on ebay for about 15-20 quid. The complete package is only about 100, which is only the price of 2 diagnostic checks at your dealer.

The cheap eBay cables are nothing like the real thing and has very limited functions. The proper ones vary from about £150 to £250 depending on whether you have CAN support or not - if this is needed depends on your car.

I bought the proper kit and it was only around the 100 mark, this was going back a few years now though. This CAN support must be on newer models as mine doesn't have this feature.

I thought the ebay cables were exactly the same just without the software.

Nope. The circuit board inside doesn't carry the dongle to use the latest versions of the software so you can only do basic functions. The kit is $249-349 plus shipping and duty.

I bought the HEX-CAN-USB cable earlier in the year and it set me back £259. The latest software(for CAN equiped cars) needs an original cable to activate it. The ebay cables can be used with a registered copy of VAG-COM to get the full functionality on non CAN equiped cars or you can use the free software for limited functions.
