Vag-com

I really want to have a shot at vag com. Nothing too complex just reading fault codes etc but I haven't got a clue what cable I need :o I did an ebay search and was left a bit  will any of them do the job?

most of the serial leads will work with early versions of vagcom (up to ver 3xx.xx) usb leads are sometimes hit and miss due to drivers and incompatibilities.
Also, beware the shareware version (ie, trialware that becomes full version with a registration key from rosstec) as they have limited logging and fault clearing abilities. you need the full version to run logs over block 025 ie the juicey boost/timing ones etc.

I have both Vag-com(hex-usb-can) and an obdII reader. Both can do dyno runs but you have to be accurate with the weight of the car with the driver to get good results. You need to add the driver and car weight together then in third gear from a low speed rollling start put you foot down up to the redline(on a flat road). It will work out from the speed increase/weight how much power the car putting out. As an example the A3 2.0TFSI quattro weighs 1470kg according to the audi brochures but in reality ours weighs 1576kg. They are good as an indication but same as gps times not tottaly accurate.

ross-tech.com for all the proper cables and software. ive tried 2 ebay specials and neither worked.

As for the vag-com live dyno, not sure about that but there are other software available that will do the same live diagnostics.

after seeing one in use i bought a £10 ebay jobbie and have had no problems reading the codes from my mothers 2001 Polo.

I use it for my leon. I've only got the free version though so can only view/clear fault codes. It plugs into a socket in the cubby hole in front of the gear stick. I'd expect to to be in roughly the same place on mk4 golfs and mk1 audi a3's.
