Vague security question.

This doesn’t really have anything to do with the windows operating system apart from a possible application of the device; but I figured that anyone who would know would be in here or the *nix forums, if I have misjudged this threads placement Dons please feel free to move it.

I would normally Google this sort of query but I’ve been unable to pull anything meaningful from my searches. This is a rather vague question but a few months ago there was air of the possible commercial application of a handheld device that produced a seemingly random and unpredictable string of characters controlled by a chip that is synchronized with software at a different offsite location. The handheld chip’s string of characters are used in an authentication procedure and as these chips are one off’s only the person with the device in hand is able to complete the authentication process. This was a proposed system to increase the security of online banking but it was dropped due to expenses. I’m sure you can see the security benefits if applied elsewhere.

Does anyone have any more information or even better links to this technology or any names for devices used? If not can you point me to someone who possibly would know?

Edit: I’ve managed to find it myself through even more googling, if anyone’s interested look up two-factor token authentication, whilst not exactly what I was looking for it is similar. If anyone knows more about my original request please still tell me about it.

Cheers for your help guys.
–Will.

Sounds very similar to the token system Securid or Activcard. These use a similar method but using numbers rather than full character sets.
