I have a Vaio SZ Core Duo laptop. Just came back to my room to find my laptop unusually quiet - the CPU fan wasn't running. Checked the CPU temp and it was idling at 66degC!

I think the fan's expired as nothing I can do will get it to come on, and when I put my nose to the vent I can smell that 'dead motor' smell. Has anyone replaced a Vaio CPU fan in the past, and was it hassle?

Never mind, fixed it. Didn't have a screwdriver (at Uni) but managed to get the back panel off with a knife. The fan wasn't spinning and was caked in dust - gave it a prod and blew all the dust out and it started up again. Seems to be working OK now, back down to 41degC, though I can feel it vibrating a bit - hope it doesn't die.

sz is a bit of a pain to work on, lots of fiddly cables and all very delicate, and packed into a rather tight space, i know the base panel gives access to the cpu and heatsink but not sure if you can get to the fan, it maybe a full strip down and mainboard out job. i wouldnt recommend it if you dont have any notebook knowledge.

Thanks for your help. Yeah, took the base panel off - wouldn't have been able to remove the fan as only half of it was accessible, but fortunately it only seemed to need a prod!
