I'm looking at getting a Sony Vaio or Toshiba Tecra laptop.

Which would you suggest?

I have an old Tecra that has served me well with the recovery disks on CD.

The one thing putting me off the Sony is the recovery disk is a hidden partition on the Hdd. A nuisance if I want to upgrade the disk at a later date.

Not looked into it yet, but not sure how the Tecra will work with recovery software.

Any thoughts of opinions please?

I think you can create a set of recovery discs with all HD based recoveries, you can on the sony and the Toshiba. Tecras are a bit dull and are more aimed at business side well they used to be anyway.

Been using my Sony vaio daily for the last 5-6 years now, been very pleased with it especially after changing the HD to a faster one.
You could always do a partition image then put that on your new hard drive
;)

I'd go for the Tecra if the specs and prices are similar. Sony really dropped the ball on build quality over the last few years; so all they really have standing for them is decent screens, and they look nice.
I worked at the large purple shirted brand up til a bit over a year ago, and some of the faults and design defects I showed people now and then shocked them, there was a place on the current line of Vaios at the time, apply a little pressure and you could hear half the chassis creeking, plastic clips coming apart and the keyboard side starting to lift up.

Im not saying the Sonys are poor laptops; but they dont carry the build quality to justify the premium they used to; they still work, and work reasonably well (bar insistance on using rubbish GPUs), BUT dont buy a Sony thinking it's going to be exceptionally high build quality compared to the majority of other laptops on the market anymore, all Im saying.

Last I heard, the Tecra were still aimed at business users and pretty hard wearing.

If you like a bit of style, Sony all the way. Still made better than most and nice looking machines, not to mention the fantastic screens!

The Tecra is a workhorse. I have an old (maybe 10 years) one in my for sale thread now, still works like the day it was made, never had to be repaired. If you need reliability and usually a better spec for your money (bar gfx), this is the one to get. (Or maybe lenovo thinkpad!)

Cheers guys.

I was looking at the Tecra M10 or the Sony NW21ZF.

Listening to your thoughts I think it's going to have to be teh Tecra. Slightly bulkier but as Alexrose1uk said, pretty hard wearing (always a good feature for my clumsiness) and I have an old model of a Tecra.

Thanks for your input guys :)
