Does anybody know of a way to validate the status of an XP installation without installing WGA and having it fall over at all?

I've got a machine here to fix that the client knows had a un-licenced copy XP on, he took it to a local PC repair place (which no longer exists) and paid them to sort it which they did, only there is still no COA on the machine and he doesn't recall ever being given any discs or a COA sticker.

My obvious suspicion is that the shop has just cracked or bypassed the original WGA notification but I'd like to be able to confirm this before doing anything to mess with his system, I can clone the drive and attempt to validate that but I'm hoping somebody has a quicker solution.

Thanks :)

bare in mind, they could have any old OEM or retail copy, also cracked..

that was just how to tell if it's a corp version

I'd still image first

also..

start, run

eula.txt

scroll to bottom of the file, if you google the code in there, it'll tell you the type of disc it has

and possibly, use jelly bean finder, then google the key that it gives you

if you have google results, then it's pirated..

Apparently volume licence keys will always have a MPC of 55274 so that makes life easier.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool should do what you're looking for without the full-blown WGA install :)
