Hi guys,

I am looking at putting together a small box used primarily for downloading/repairing (par files etc./unrarring. It won't be used for much else as I use my laptop primarily, but I want it to be able to handle these three processes easily, whilst being able to repair or unrar a set of files reasonably quickly. My laptop is not as quick. I suppose I could consider using it for other processes ie. a media server for me and my housemates to stream media to our computers, possibly add some extra features to our network like logging etc.

I'll more than likely use VNC or something similar, so no monitor/keyboard/mouse needed etc. although I do have all of these plugged into my laptop dock and can easily switch them over should they be required.

I have a SATA drive to go in there, but may look at expanding this with another drive etc. I was thinking along the lines of a SFF system as it can then either go on my desk or under it without taking up any room. I was going to post this in SFF but not sure what the deal is in there. I also have a DVD+/-RW that I can add to it also.

Anyone fancy speccing one for me? I'm not fussed about new parts, so may go scouting MM when it re-opens. Really just looking for recommendations for parts etc.

My brother's PC only cost around 300 quid back in the Summer:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Asus A8N-VM CSM M-ATX
1GB generic RAM
200GB Samsung Spinpoint
DVD-RW
Antec Aria with 350W PSU

Obviously you already have some spare hardware so it can only get even cheaper. Only managed to find the CPU, RAM and HDD on OcUK. Seems they don't have any more 939 motherboards.

Since it is 939 you probably wont be able to upgrade it much, although you could opt for maybe a cheap AMD X2 which should last you ages if it is just a download box.

No problem. I was just thinking around about now is a great time to build a cheap PC. Stores will be wanting rid of any older components in Christmas and January Sales and you will probably get a lot of people selling their old gear on the Bay or here on MM.

I will have a spare 4400+ by the end of January :D

Mite be a tad overkill but for £35 you cant go wrong

thats absloute bargin

im considering that board/a 3ghz 939/very cheap gpu and ive got plenty of h/ds here to use

the box will be used as a webserver so a board like that would do me fine even if it is a tad overkill

its a real good deal to build a powerful S939 system if if it is overkill, aint nothing like having to much power

i use an old athlon 1.4 for that and more! handles with ease... used to use a p3 633... all was good til it died.... cheaper the better thats what i say

If you want a powerful yet cheap ATX system then yeah that DFI is the dogs danglies.

Not much use in an M-ATX machine unless you are particularly good with a dremel and know how to rewire a mobo :D

be warned though, RDX200 is amazingly cheap, and a serious overclockers dream once its working, it is however an absolute PIG to setup, i've bought 3, none have worked out the box without ATLEAST a cmos clear, and an update to the latest BIOS, even then one refused to work without spending several days changing memory timings until i found out which one was causing it to become unstable. these boards should come with a stress warning imo :p
still insanely cheap though, thats why i bought 3 :D

How about one of the Primo Basic systems that ocul do for £234

A64 3500+
512Mb RAM
80GB HDD
DVD ROM
Onboard VGA

Not a bad buy for the price
