It appears time to give a boost to my second PC and I wanted a cheap updrage solution.

The root of the system is the old faithfull Athlon mobile 2500, NF7-S v2 abit board with some old corsair ram and a 9800 pro! But the poor thing despite still going strong is a bit long in the tooth.

The components I want to upgrade are the obvious, Mobo, ram, gfx and cpu but without breaking the bank. Ideally I'd like to get the lot for <£300/£350. I'll probably also need a cpu cooler

The case it'll be going in is an old Coolmater Praetorian with a quality Antec power supply.

My initial thoughts were a Core 2 dual core, one of the Gigabyte G41/G31 mobos, some DDR2 PC-6400 memory and a cheap Nvidia card.

Appreciate any thoughts from anyone who has done a similar thing recently.

OCZ OBSIDIAN 4Gb DDR3 £89.99
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO £74.99
AMD PHENOM II X2 550 £76.99
POWERCOLOR HD5770 512Mb £112.99

Total is £354.96

Might be over kill for a second pc, could give the pc in your sig a strong right hook!

It will also take the new AMD HEX CORE CPUS due out, so wont become obsolete like your intel 775.

Lol, thanks. I'll check those out. I figured an upgrade would likely be on par with current main rig, how time flies its only 2 years old!

Your main rig will become your second rig. LOL

One more tip, the 1gb 5770 cards are worth the extra £16.

Alternatively swap the graphics cards over, have the 5770 in your main rig? If it's for a 2nd PC you could also save a little by going for an Athlon II X3 425 instead of the Phenom.

+1 8800GT is more than enough for your 2nd pc I guess and the 5770 would be a nice upgrade ^^.

I'd go for that, too

My upgrade strategy is always "upgrade the best PC, and cascade the old part down", otherwise you just end up with two PCs that become obsolete at a similar time.
