Am I the only one on this entire planet disgusted with Valves increasing greed?

What happened to the days when modification games to the half life engines were free!?

Now it just seems that if a mod becomes popular Valve are all over it, and throwing money at the creators just so they can add the mod to their pay-per-key system. I find it very monopolising and against everything the original ideas were put into production for.

Counterstrike, Team Fortress, Day of Defeat, Garys Mod are to name of a few of the fun mods that were created in the name of fun and passion for the engine and how customisable it is. Now it just seems like Valve are snapping all the fun and love of the game and selling it back to us. Why can't they let these things just be?

I think its fair to say, if I dont like it, dont buy it, and trust me, I won't be, I just find it very hard to swallow the fact that they are doing this and people are lapping it up and dishing out cash for mods that used be created and made for fun and love for all of us to enjoy for free, as they were created.

I disagree but I DO hate the fact that if you want to play TF2 now, you must buy a load of crap you dont want.

I want TF2, now.

I do not want HL2 Episode 2. I do not want Portal. I do not want HL2 AGAIN. I do not want HL2 Episode 1. I just want TF2.

Yet I've got to buy all that crap just to play TF2 now, or wait till next month. Most annoying.

That's just the way of the world, you should be grateful that these mods were free for a short while.

Also bear in mind that the prospect of getting a phat cheque from Valve is a good incentive for people to create great mods - I don't think we can blame the team behind CS or TF for selling out.

Then consider the fact that by Valve taking over these projects, you are pretty much guarenteed a consistent standard of development and support (with the obvious exception of the TF franchise, which was changed from being a Quakeworld mod to a Halflife one). It also gives it a seal of approval and raises public awareness of the mod, thus helping to attract more players.

The mods attracted players without a pricetag.

The only Multiplayer part of both engines that failed, is Valves HL: Deathmatch....

strange that.

And also, allot of Counterstrike players that i've spoke still say that 1.5 (which was the last release before valve took over CS) is the best theres ever been, far better than source.

Then play cs 1.5, oh wait, there's nobody to play against, speaks volumes don't you think?

its good and its bad.

Good; There is now incentive to create good quality mods as it may become a commercial spinner for the developing mod and easy to distribute - ergo increasing the number of quality mods being produced.

Bad; you have to pay for it.

Yeah god forbid Valve make it possible for people to make a small fortune off their supremely popular mod that they poured their blood and sweat into, and that thousands and thousands of people play.

agreed , the orange box is the best value pack ive bought ... and i would happily pay £25 just for team fortess 2 .. steam is great

yep i think its a good thing valve are getting together with the dev of good mods.

cs wouldn't be where it is now if they didn't and ive played cs since 0.5 near enough every week for the past 7 years ish paying 10 quid for a new cs which is new and fresh is a small price anyone who says otherwise is cheap tbh and people who are clutching at 1,5/1.6 fair play to them but times change hardware gets newer people want more better gfx gameplay etc its like saying the original quake is better than quake 3 etc people might still play quake doesn't make it better!!!

and paying 25 quid for 5 games 3 whole new games even if you have hl2 is still worth 25 quid its not like its much money when people spend 400-800 quid on a pc!! i mean how cheap can people be!!

if people are stupid enough to spend a extra 5-6k on a car than what the company who made it cost them isn't that the same thing but you don't expect them to give it free do you!!!!!

Also, well done at making it a Valve hate post, why not hate the original developers who sold out?

Answer, because money talks.

Erm... £20 for TF2 or would you like HL2, HL2 Ep1, HL2 Ep2, Portal AND TF2 for £20?

Really, it's an awesome deal, your basically getting games for free.

So the fact that you have to pay for something means it is not fun anymore? If you're that bothered by it why don't you go away, create a great mod by yourself and when Valve come knocking with a big pot of cash you can tell them to stuff it!

I don't have any issue in paying for TF2 at all. I just look back and remember all the great times I had in TFC years ago and it makes it all worthwhile. Even if TF2 can give me half as much enjoyment now, it's still well worth the £25 I paid. I already have HL2 but I don't have the other games. I don't particularly want them but now that I have them I will be inclined to give them a go when I'm not on TF2.

After last nights blast on TF2 I can wholeheartedly say that Valve have actually done a really good thing and I have no qualms in paying to be able to enjoy the beta a few weeks earlier.

It's only an awesome deal if you are interested in the extra stuff.

Some of us couldn't give a stuff about Episode 2, Portal, and whatever other junk you get.

I just want TF2. But, unless I pay extra, I have to wait. Grrr.

The only thing i have a grumble at is that when the steam was first conceived value hinted at cheaper prices then boxed versions, but nearly if not all the games on steam atm (for UK anyway) are more expensive then what you can get at (online) shops, its ridiculous.

I don't care if it's a free mod or a pay-for upgrade, if it's worth it, I'll pay it.

As for the extras in Orange Box, it allows me to give mine free to a friend ... spread the love man ... spread the love :)

ahhh "only £20" when they all used to be "£0"

its not the price its the principal, i guess everybody has none.
