Valve Comments on the Future of PC Gaming

Reading that now.. but funnily enough I was browsing PC games today. Round the usual game and music shops, with hardly anything there. Went to A SHOP which is usually quite good for PC games for me.. and low behold they've done the same. PC games are now relegated to one corner of a two floor store, on three sections of shelf.

That isn't much if you compare that to the Game stores that opened up years ago, consoles have slowly edged PC games nearly off the shelf!

It's definately all about Consoles at the moment, I think computers have once again fallen back to office machines, used for doing work and browsing the net, etc.
Consoles are also a hell of a lot more accessible now, appealing to all ages and nearer capabilities of the PC (Media Centres, Internet Browsers, etc).

Don't mistake the struggle of the high street retailer with the faux-dieing of pc gaming. PC games are being relegated in shops because of the vast popularity of online retailers and content delivery providers, not because they don't sell or because they don't make many anymore.

What's available in store for the PC to what's available at the same shops on-line service is completely a different story.

The fact is the a PC gamer can switch to doing what ever they were doing turn on the browser is it was not already open & buy a game on-line in no time from large selection of sources & get back to what they where doing.

Most consolers don't have the luxury.
They will have to get up & go to the pc to buy online & be of an age to use a credit card.

Was in a shop yesturday looking to buy a copy of AOC. I thought I was either going blind or losing the plot. I couldnt see any PC games, all the signs where for consoles only. I was just about to ask a shop assistant where they were when I spotted them on a pillar, yup, the entire pc collection was displayed on a pillar that was holding the roof up.

How things have changed.

Personnaly, I have not got a game from a shop for years, everything Ive had in the last year has come from steam with the exception of crysis. I only go into a game shop a few times a year. Seems pointless as I no what good games are coming out already and if I want it I get it straight away rather than wait to go to a shop.

when i was in america earlyer in the year there was a massive virgin megastore, i was looking for pc games but they didnt sell any. i was very confused

There are some bigger electronic stores in the NY area that have a great selection of PC games if that's the area you were in :)

But really, PC games are a product that's very suited to selling online, either as download or shipped. I do miss the good old days with tons of shelves in dedicated stores but to be honest, steam does bring about so many advantages.

Lmao, every thread here is an hoot! You always get some numpty coming along "ohh thats a competitor". Either these people enjoy being forum police or maybe they just like to kiss the moderators asses. I can understand mentioning a competitor in some form of link about a product, but to pretend like other stores apart from ocuk dont exist is a joke!

why on earth would i suck up to the mods?

its called being a nice person, I forgot that was banned on the internet. I thought Id save you from getting a suspension in case you a.) didn't know the rule or b.) forgot about it. But no worries, next time I'll just laugh at you, i forgot thats how we're supposed to behave on here

A lot of people don't realize that rule until someone points it out, i made that stupid mistake and got corrected, saved me a suspension which i'm really happy about.

well i think its pathetic, when someone says a game store where they sell games its a competitor? it apprently doesnt count as a generic term for a store that sells games? yes it is both but taking it out of context just to say "might want to remove the competitor" is pathetic

Erm, have you checked the graphics section lately?

I doubt the many peeps who've bought / planning to buy ATI's + Nvidia's latest and greatest will agree with you on that one.
