Valve Comments on the Future of PC Gaming

was an interesting read, its hard to not be convinced by the man at valve, although I guess I need an excuse to be optimistic about pc gaming right now...

The trouble is that I need an excuse to be optimistic about gaming at the moment. If you look at the amount of good, immersive, storyline driven games being released at the moment, it is small compared with a few years ago. More and more companies are targeting "party" games, which naturally work better on consoles. This is why PC gaming has issues.

I can't get into that 'cos it's blocked by Websense. I'd be interested to see what Valve have to say. Can anyone copy the text into a post?

Cheers.

tbh mate its two pages long but heres the most important bits :-

Valve: Why the PC is the future
You want figures? There are 260 million online PC gamers, a market that dwarfs the install base of any console platform, online or offline. Each year, 255 million new PCs are made
valve rock!

i think its fair to say PC gamers dont go to their local store anymore to purchase their shiny new games and why should they ? for example i recently ordered Spore via EA STORE for a measly £18 using a 50% off voucher(from previous online purchase) and £5 discount for buying the Creature creator ... Call of Jaurez £5 , Civ IV + 2 expansions £18 , Orange Box £17 etc etc etc I have no need to spend money travelling to Shop 'A' and spend £30-40 .. whats interesting is my kid has practically stopped using her consoles and prefers to play the likes of Warcraft III or retro PC games like what Neil79 posts on here... the money ive saved over the last year or so will contribute to a shiny new G280 or maybe 2*4870's or maybe another monitor

lets face it the only reason you need a console is for when Nintendo release a Zelda game ...

I buy all my games either on line or via digital distribution, havent bought a game in a shop for about 6 years, I can imagine that the majority of PC Gamers do the same hence why there are so few pc games on sale in shops these days. Its a common mis conception that this is indicating a dying market but this is absolute poo.

True, I get my games online etc. but my brother got a game in a shop and it was like €60 or something. No wonder nobody goes near them.

Was in a shop yesturday looking to buy a copy of AOC. I thought I was either going blind or losing the plot. I couldnt see any PC games, all the signs where for consoles only. I was just about to ask a shop assistant where they were when I spotted them on a pillar, yup, the entire pc collection was displayed on a pillar that was holding the roof up.

How things have changed.

I went to a gaming shop yesterday in town, you walk in theres nothing but console games, but then i walked down two or 3 stairs and there were camera's, phones etc......and on the right, tucked away in a corner were some PC Games, STALKER was there but no HL2, CS etc nothing like that, just a few oldie's really, but PC Games are still bigger than consoles in sales etc...

Valve Comments on the Future of PC Gaming

There are some interesting statistics quoted in this article:

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=160866&page=1

He has a point, this last lot of years I have been stuck to WoW and EVE with only a few other games getting a look in. My 360 is nothing but a dvd player to me and my Wii is just catching dust. Consoles are the cash cows for shops at the moment which is why they are getting the space, thats retail not an indication of a down turn in PC gaming. WoW has a turnover of $120 million per month, most console games don't generate that in their life time.

interesting but why didn't he give sales figures for steam? would give us a comparison showing the difference between retail sales and digital distribution

I cannot wait for Valve to release STEAM Cloud, for once when i format my computer, i will not have to worry about backing up my save of Half Life 2. :D
