Valve confirms hardware development.

sounds like that valve might be dipping its toes into the market with some peripherals first of all.

then again who wouldn't like a valve GPU? buy our new super doopervalve 790 for only £999 and receive an exclusive TF hat

I'm not sure If I'd like Value to "lease" my games to me on a console. I like to own what I buy... and I think you would have more ownership with Sony or Microsoft than what Valve would give you.

I don't know much about that... but given the choice I always go retail. The XBL has no real incentive for full games on demand as the pricing isnt very competitive (though it is getting better).

I know with buying games at retail there's no chance of Microsoft coming into my home and taking my games away, or forbidding me to sell them on etc. That offsets even Valves low pricing IMO. Though it would be nice to have the best of both.

Yet MS could easily brick your 360 and you wouldn't be able to play any of your games without buying a new console. Which is just as likely - if not more - to happen as Valve taking back all their software :p

I guess we'll have to wait and see what kind of hardware they're talking about making, if it's peripherals as the article hints toward then it's not really that big of a deal, if they're thinking about entering the console market that'll be huge news though. I understand where you're coming from in regard to the feeling of a lack of true ownership on digital titles, but for me I don't feel that, I wouldn't be dissuaded by a download-only Valve console any more than I'd be dissuaded from downloading games from the Playstation Store or XBL Marketplace.

Well Microsoft would only be doing that unintentionally, Valve would be doing it on purpose if they suspected you of wrong doing. You here loads of horror stories of people losing access to the games they paid for.. and best case scenario having to wait weeks to get back to playing their games. Also at least with Sony and MS you have a choice how you purchase your game. It's all speculative at the moment but how much control Valve have on the PC is worrying as a long term gamer.

If MS were to do that, then they would have done it to all the modded 360's, instead of just banning them from live.

Also, you own the hardware because you bought it. MS would be in trouble if they "intentionally" started disabling devices. Not counting all the harm they would do to their own brand.

I just cant see this being anything other than a hardware portal to the existing Steam platform, streaming like OnLive though. I just dont see where Valve would think its a great idea to build a traditional console or the substantial capital to free up to do it (how rich are they compared to Sony, Nintendo and MS?)...

Interesting times though, Valve potentially jumping in is just much more ripples...

ps3ud0

Isnt anyone else worried about all this diversifying of their brand? Doesnt say much for their opinion of the future of PC gaming.....

They're a business, their business is games. Makes perfect sense when you think about it, I don't think it says much if anything about the future of PC gaming, just that they want to get their fingers in multiple pies to make more monies.

Probably trying to escapse Windows 8 given Gabe's recent scorning of it, be cool if they released a console that had a Linux based OS that would boost Linux gaming tremendously.
