I didn't think you had to use your facebook account on the quest headsets.. I know as I don't even have a faceache account.. or was that your point.. and i'm just a bit short?

You did originally, but they stopped that not too long after the 2 was released. That was my point, people have been holding off buying meta based on a thing that's not been true for years now.

Yes. It turns out you need both eye AND face tracking enabled for Steam Link to use eye-tracked foveated encoding on the Quest Pro - I only had eye tracking enabled.

I have now got it running smoothly, but it looks awful. Just low resolution and blurry compared to Virtual Desktop. Like comparing a Quest 2 to a Quest 3.

It's very smooth and my GPU is hardly breaking a sweat at even 200% supersampling, but Steam Link is simply not encoding at a high enough resolution and there's no sharpening feature either.

Virtual Desktop looks like it's playing on a much higher resolution headset.
 
the hardware might be interesting - but where's the HL:Alyx successor that was supposed to come out with this? :)
 
One thought that occurred to me is that the battery is not part of the main unit, so how is that going to work with 3rd party headstraps? Are they going to replace the battery too? That'll make them even more expensive. Can you move the battery across to the other headstrap? Where will they put the additional battery?

Also, I know a lot was made about how good the wireless PCVR is, but can you still do wired PCVR?

Yeah they will have to. The strap is all connected (faceplate, strap, battery). There's also a properitery connector hmd side.

Heard a rumor there was an audio strap coming later so guess that will be the more traditional hard strap style.

I like the magnetic facecover rather than the usual velcro. Some bits have been well thought out, just a shame about the panels really.
