Valve Index Roomscale Setup

On the Index, i know there are 2 options when setting up the room, either room scale or Stationary position.. however i can never seem to get the Room Scale working, or how i want it to be even if i have enough place space 2m x 2m.

When setting to room scale, either the controllers look as if my arms are 4feet long, or when i get those controllers calibrated properly, the floor doesn't.. and feel like my waist in in the floor.

Is there some sore of trick to this.. or am i doing it wrong? Setting to stationary mode seems fine
 
as I understand it (from my own experiences, others may agree or disagree):
- Standalone setup still permits you to do room scale activities i.e. you can stand up and walk about so long as your lighthouses are correctly positioned. What you don't get though is the guardian system so you need to be careful about the risks of physical injury or damage.
- 2m x 2m I think is just too small, you need a larger space
- the space doesn't have to be a perfect rectangle
- when you setup the HMD tracking you either as I recall place it on the floor or have to enter the height, if you get that part wrong then yes you will get a waist at floor level experience... sounds like a setup error to me

Ahh in that case, i guess i'll stick with stationary. No monitors in front of me so i won't break anything.

What is classed as an acceptable play space? I was under the assumption 1.5m x 1.5m was the minimum no?

Initially i would set my height then calibrate, but regardless of the setup mode, doesn't seem to calibrate accurately for me... though works every time i put the headset on the floor and do it.



How do you have your lighthouses set up?

In my previous house I originally had them mounted to the celling, and would quite often get the issues you are describing. I then dropped them down to a wall mount still above my height but lower than the ceiling, and that seemed to solve the issues. Also do you have them running corner to corner of your room?

I'll have to give that a try.

My normal play space is in my study which is just enough at stationary but far to little to walk around in, thus decided to use a couple of active extensions and migrate the setup to the dining room which has a bit more space.

The LH on the other hand, one is placed in the corner of the room in front of me, wrapped to an extendable pole just above my height, while the other corner, the LH is sitting on a cabinet table so to speak (the dining room and kitchen are kinda open plan). So technically if my ceiling was around 2.5m from floor to ceiling, one LH would be at a height of 1.8m facing at an angle towards me, and the other at a height of 1.5m
Do the LH need to be exact height with one another? wouldn't of expected much of a difference if one is placed higher than the other as long as the devices can 'see' you.
 
I've just setup mine as stationary, as I have about 1.5m squared to play in, and the lack of guardian is not really an issue as I've trained myself to stay centred. That works well for games with artifical locomotion, but I do have to be careful for roomscale games where you turn around a lot and reach out for stuff.
As long as you have enough room to stretch out your arms and rotate without hitting anything then you can play most VR games.

good to know, and likewise having played in my study which is tiny, i'm so used to planting myself in one position that i find it odd/uncomfortable actually moving around, so guardian wouldn't be an issue for me either
