This is potentially a nightmare as we can all see what's going to happen here:rolleyes:

1: The big 75-90% discounts will go away.
2: Publisher/developer greed will get in the way so the sales will more frequent but for lesser amounts.
3: Publisher/developers will try to compete with each other & spoil similar games launches by offering the discount at the same time on the competing product.

I know publishers hate the big discounts as they think it undermines the full price model but this is not the way forward its open to abuse IMO.

It seems to me Valve are growing tired of running the Steam store they should have just sold it off as is not mess around with it even more this could create daily discounts which create conflicts all year long :( & it also undermines the full price pricing model as why pay more if its going to have constant sales

This is the way it should have always been TBH.

Steam provide the service, they dictate what percentage of the sale they take, I see no reason why they should be setting the RRP price or sale price for any none 1st party Valve games.

Chances are they may use the DFS method. Inflate prices to then offer games in a 'sale'. The consumer thinks they are getting money off and the developer makes generous profit.

Surely competition is a good thing for the consumer though? It forces developers to be competitive instead of churning out the same tat but in a different box (I'm looking at you CoD). The only abuse I would be worried about is price fixing. But then that is something I can't control. As long as decent games are available at decent prices I will buy them. If this decision means extortionate prices I won't buy any games. Its a simple equation.

But you talk of greed like it is not a two way street. The average punter is greedy for 'deals' and will fight in the street to get something for nothing. You mention steam sales. What are they? A time when us greedy lot fall over ourselves for cut price games. Now that is at risk of being taken away and many will complain because they have developed an attitude of entitlement. Developers dont have to discount anything they sell you. You don't go to work for 25% of your wages for 8 weeks of the year do you? Why should they?

Surely allowing the developers of a game the initiative to reduce the price and instigate sales is a good thing ?

That's really interesting, and does shed a lot of light on the situation.

If developers never put decent sales on, people aren't going to buy their games at all. My Steam library is huge, but I wouldn't have looked twice at half the games if they weren't on a decent offer at some point. I don't think I'm too abnormal; I've always thought people will either buy a game when it comes out, or wait until it comes down to a good price.

If developers collude and keep prices high, they're only gonna shoot themselves in the foot.

There will still be steam sales with massive discounts. Valve has always had to negiotate with the developers in order to include their titles in the sales, so this changes nothing in that regard.

In fact, many titles are over priced on Steam, so some developers may actually lower them.

There needs to be a new tab for this so we don't have to scroll through the 1000 of games on steam or w/e. The only way of knowing if an individual game is on sale is if you have it on your wishlist I think?

Valve do have a funny attitude towards Steam...

Anyway, surely the big sales will stay. I've bought games there that I would never even contemplate purchasing for anything approaching normal price.

If publishers can't see that, then they deserve to lose the monies.
