Valve - Steam Deck

It's essentially just a pc so should do.

In the ign interview, their interviewer asked that exact question and the steam guys basically said it will.

But I bet there's a caveat like having to install windows for that, rather than the preinstalled SteamOS which again they said Is completely fine to do.

Seems pretty open but want to hear real world reports first

It would definitely require Windows, unless I've missed something and Gamepass works on Steam too but last time I checked, it was its own thing entirely.

The MS store doesn’t work out of Linus natively but since this is a PC you would or should be able to dial boot with windows and then it will have the MS store which will run Gamepass.

Just fired up Steam to take a look out of interest. Saying I can reserve in Q1 2022! Hahahahah. Is this the new 30xx series?

Think I'll stick with my good old Nvidia Shield K1 tablet running gamestream. Ok it's not 'portable' per se, but it's portable in my house and given we live in the ******* apocalypse and no one will be going anywhere again after Autumn....

Q2, 2022 now lol. A lot of pre order will drop off though once it's out and the reviews are out if they arent gushing maybe.

Fantastic gaming handheld, and a great little portable linux box too, even though you can also install windows.
This will sell like hot cakes. Lots of people already have a decent steam collection, plus with the ability to play a huge back catalogue of games running under windows, there's no need for the switch, or indeed the switch pro.
Buying this will be a great excuse to actually play the games in your steam collection, the games you bought years ago but haven't even touched yet! Whipping this out whilst on the sofa is convenient, there will be no reason to not play all those games!

The valve dev in the ign hands-on said it has 2 terflops of power and should let people play the games in their library without issue at 720p.

Not sure that's the 21st resolution you're looking for...

Erm, it's on a 7" screen. The games will look fantastic at that resolution on a screen that size.

I play my switch 99% docked & only for the exclusives really, so this doesn't matter too much to me. (ie I don't really need a handheld)
But I must admit, this has potential. I've got over 100 Steam games & if I did want to play portable, that's a great starting library. It means you can basically just cost the hardwre & inherit your whole library.
I really think this has a market. Not sure how big it will be, but it has potential.

I think I will wait until a model comes out that can do 1080p on a monitor with ease. 720p is a bit low for PC games on the TV. The Switch is fine because the game style lends itself that way but that’s Nintendo and the whole eco system leans that way. The PC side of games I feel most games goes more for graphics fidelity which benefits from higher res, 1080p minimum IMO.

I think you could have a lot of fun playing PC games @ 720p, especially if that means 60fps. I say that as a Nintendo apologist who can still tolerate 30fps wii/ GC era graphics games if the game is well put together enough (Metroid Trilogy, original Xenoblade Chronicles etc). I think you'll be surprisd how acceptable these PC graphics will be on a 1080p TV

It would be fine on a TV up to 32" but mine is 55" 4k OLED.

I mean I could put £4 to reserve it and chew on it for the next 5 months.

If you reserve now you are allocated on in Q2 2022.

I would not buy this to connect to a screen, unless you’re using Thunderbolt to add on a mid range GPU.

I agree and think the resolution is fine for a 7" screen, it's the same as the Switch.

I was responding to someone who was making it sound like this was going to be significantly better resolution wise when it's the same. Although I take the point that it probably drops a lot lower on Switch due to dynamic scaling, and the Deck will probably have a much more stable frame rate.
