Valve - Steam Deck

Hmmmm, interesting. Very compelling.

I shall watch this with interest.

Could be one of those things where I don't know I need it until I have it. Or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it! :p

I've got a pre-reg in for the 512Gb model. Unfortunately, with having a new born I won't have much time to game and this seems like an obvious compromise where I can take this with me out and about as well as game on the sofa.

I will definitely be installing Windows on it on a separate partition to use things like Office and the like as once its plugged into a USB-C dock with HDMI/DP out it will act like any regular PC and have KBM functions as well as monitor display (albeit probably limited to 720p for gaming still). If AMD can get on board and develop FSR to boost the performance in a lot of games (much like DLSS) then this could be a handy little thing indeed.

SO why was this thread made in the console section and why make it when there already IS A THREAD on the pc section!!!

mods!!????

Can you mereg the two please

Because if you use it with the SteamOS it’s effectively a console.

I can install Linux on a PS3 but discussions on that don’t belong solely in the PC section.

Windows is certainly an option, but think the Arch-based SteamOS will be better overall. Gaming on Linux is getting really good now and the Steam Deck

I don't think it's worth putting Windows on this device. SteamOS 3.0 will probably perform better anyway, and as it's a full Linux distro, you have office type applications anyway.

A lot of people are looking for a portable Game Pass device.

O so it plays console games?

Umm no it doesn’t, it plays PC Games

There is no difference between PCs and consoles except for the closed OS, which SteamOS effectively is. SteamOS plays curated and customized games via a closed platform, just like the Nintendo Switch or PS5.

Sure you can install another OS on it, just like you can install another OS on the PS3 (or older “unlocked” consoles such as the Switch). The fantasy that you have in your head of a clear division between PC and consoles doesn’t exist.

Try to think about these concepts before you post.

I'm getting fairly excited. I need to list a csgo knife or two because I don't actually want to pay for it

No one getting excited about this? Lots of new YouTube videos out now, I wish I had gone for the cheaper 64GB eMMC one now as doesn't seem to be a world of difference in load times and performance.
That’s the one I went for and should have it on release as I had one ordered within minutes of launch. Did not bother with the expensive versions as I am happy with the slower storage as I will mainly play old games anyways. Hopefully will have it in 2-3 weeks time so yeah a bit excited :D

Valve is basically Google, aren't they. Nobody will be talking about these in 6 months, and Valve will lose interest.
I highly doubt it. But even if it is the case I am very happy as it is something I have wanted for a long time.

I think this is a different proposition to the steam box.

Steam box - convincing people who had a pc/console to purchase essentially the same thing, or switch from a PC/console to steambox

steam deck - another category.

Even if that happens, the saving grace is that this is just a PC. Unlike a console if the system dies, the eco-system dies and thus the console becomes useless.

This won't, never will really. It will forever runs PC games in 720p for as long as the games you are running runs well at 720p with the spec it has now. And as a games library that it can run, right now it has more than you can play in your life time, it has more out of the gate than all of the other consoles combined. and then some.

So even if Valve lose interest, unless Valve shuts down Steam, the Steam Deck itself will still have value and still works like a PC.
And even if vle shuts down steam, you will be able to install a differen linux OS or even windows to carry on playing on it

There is a much bigger/more active thread in the PC games section, because you know… it’s a PC :p
