not the trip into work I wanted this morning, I’m sat at a T junction waiting to turn left, the car ahead of me turns right, the van heading up the road and wanting to turn right into the road I’m in starts his turn and hasn’t spotted the cyclist coming down the hill. He turns right into her path and I can hear her scream as she knows what’s about to happen.

She goes right over his bonnet and lands in front of me...I jump out the car and, thankfully, I can hear the woman screaming which means she’s alive! (yes I was pleased to hear her screaming).

I spend the next 45 mins sat in the road with her, she’s face down in the road and I won’t let her move because I’ve no idea if she has broken anything in her neck/back and I remember once being told to never move someone like that and never take off the helmet....I have to shout at a couple of people that wanted her to move.

45 mins of her holding on to my hand and me talking nonsense to keep her talking as we wait for the ambulance....luckily one of the first people to stop was an off duty police office, then we had an A&E doctor who was on his way home from a night shift (he said I’d done the right thing and don’t let her move)

Hardest thing was having to call her boyfriend and tell him what was going on and where we were...”hi, complete stranger here, calling to let you know your gf has just been taken out by an idiot....”

Also because of the way she is in the road I can see the people driving by looking at my car thinking “that prat in a 4x4 has hit that’s poor woman”...to be fair she ended up almost under my car so fair assumption but the looks over still stung a little!

Then some other random guy asks the police if it’s going to take any longer because he’s in a rush.....the look the officer gave him was great, it’s obvious what’s gone on and no way to do anything whilst the poor woman is still in the road!

Finally ambulance arrives, give my details to the police and off I go....very carefully. I’m shocked at the people that thanked me for stopping at doing what I could....of course I stopped, what kind of person would just drive off after seeing that!

Her scream and the noise of her hitting the van are sounds I’d rather not hear again.

A second earlier and this woman would have gone under the front of the van, a second later and she would have gone into the passenger door....I think either of those would have resulted in a different outcome.

Give your gf/bf/wife/husband/partner a hug and tell them you love them when you get in....

You did a decent thing there.
Years back a woman in front of me lost control of her car and flipped it. Me and the old fella in the car next to me were the only two to help.
Other people, even before it was obvious she was relatively ok were mounting kerbs to drive around. Beeping horns. Etc.

Ass hats.

All I can say is well done - that's your karma topped up for the year I reckon!

You did the right thing. Never move them unless they arnt breathing or lying in a dangerous place.

I came across motorcycle accident and had to do the same keep the guy still and stop him from taking his helmet off which was pretty hard when he was drunk (Stupid ass) He ended up just a bit bruised and no licence either as we had informed the paramedics and the police he was stinking of drink.

Just be proud of yourself as some people would have just drove round her.

As a cyclist myself you did a good thing for that woman, it's a testament to you that you think anybody would have done the same as it's not always the case. Bravo to you sir, I hope if the same ever happens to me there's somebody around willing to help me out.

Good job.

What happened with the Van driver?

When I left he was having a chat with the three police officers.

He looked shaken and pale but, frankly, he was unhurt and had said to me he hadn’t seen her....end of me giving a stuff about him tbh.

So just a point on this: Whilst it's correct that if there's no need to take off a helmet, then you shouldn't, it's also important to highlight when you should take of a helmet. If, like you said, someone is lying in a position where it's putting them in immediate danger they need to be moved or if someone isn't breathing and the helmet obstructs CPR, it must come off. They are techniques for both taking of helmets safely and moving people (log rolls). It's also worth noting that if someone is vomiting, then you need to make sure you're keeping the airway clear, which may require removing a helmet. You don't want someone to die because these subtleties are missed.

hope she is ok -
Drivers fault, was she wearing something bright ?, as a cyclist too, many do not, and do not realise how camouflaged they are.

I can well understand your relief at hearing the screams, I recall an accident I witnessed a few years back, car turned right and got t-boned by an oncoming coach which flipped it into a ditch on the opposite side of the road, I’ll never forget walking up to the wreckage and all I could hear was the radio, the driver and passenger looked asleep (no visible injuries) but unfortunately were both dead.

She had a hi viz waistcoat on, can’t remember if she had lights on the front of her bike or not.

Well done! I hope you've kept the dashcam footage. I keep a spare SD card in the car for just this eventuality. Fortunately, I've never needed it.
Not got a dash cam...but probably another good reason to get one fitted

Good job getting people to back off/not moving her etc...

Where was the van driver during all of this - you don't mention him? I hope it wasn't a hit and run.

No, he stopped and someone else was keeping an eye out for him, he did look shocked but I was more concerned with the cyclist to be honest.

I’ve since had a text from her, I asked her bf to let me know how she was, luckily just shock, brusing and a sore shoulder. That’s a lucky escape I reckon.

Nearly ran over a guy coming out from a T junction once. Checked both ways twice (it's a hard to see out of so I've very cautious), nothing there so I go to pull out when I noticed something to my left so I stop. Only can see it when he goes in front of my headlights but it's a cyclist in all black with no lights at all in the pitch black.

As for OP, well done!

What an odd thing to say if he genuinely hadn't seen her. He's made an obvious mistake and is shaken by it, shock can kill someone.
