Van v cyclist accident

massive kudos to the op, i would hope i would get the same from good people like him if i ever come a cropper on my bikes :)

Well done OP. Horrible way to start the day. Probably not the thread to be reading as I’m about to commute to work on my bike, but many lights and fluorescent clothes usually help.

To add to this there are also methods and processes to assess the likelihood of a spinal injury and how safe it is to move them - patient assessment, age, mechanism of injury, alertness of the patient and their willingness to move their neck etc. However if you’re not trained or you have doubt its best not to move them if they are in a safe position.

It’s called triage. The van driver is at worst a “green” (lowest priority) so your priority should be with the patient with more serious injuries. That’s not to say just ignore the other person completely in case their condition deteriorated, but just an occasional eye is likely to be fine.

And well done the OP, too many people just move on by in an incident so good on you for stopping. If you haven’t already perhaps consider doing a first aid course, the more advanced the better. It’s always worth having the skills and knowledge to be able to help in situations like this.

Yes a poor choice of words. I just meant that the driver didn’t factor in my actions as I was more concerned with the cyclist.

As for a first aid course....probably something to look into as I some knowledge is better than none, I just did what I thought was right until people who knew what they were doing turned up.

As to everyone saying well done for stopping, well as I was sat at the T junction waiting to turn and she ended up laying in the road in front of my car I couldn’t have driven on without running her over :D also it just seemed the right thing to do. Im glad I did something and not just stand around, I’m still surprised at the reactions of people thanking me for helping someone in such distress - for me it just seemed natural to help that person.

I got a text from her last night saying broken collar bone, bruising and scrapes. The bike needs work on it as the front is pretty smashed up. She called me a legend for staying with her.....but I said the same thing, I’m Just a guy who wanted to help someone put in a horrible situation. If the roles were reversed surely someone would do the same for me?

you could be called as a witness then, if they prosecute ? - since you did not comment particularly the driver was not driving dangerously, 'going for the gap' to turn across oncoming traffic to turn into your road. (loud music, cliched white van man)

Yup, police officers took my details and i told them what I saw and said they might be in touch for a statement from me. If required I’d do a formal statement saying exactly the same thing - not my place to judge if the driver was driving dangerously all I can say is that it was light, the road was dry not particularly busy and I had seen the cyclist coming down the hill which is why I didn’t pull away, as soon as he started moving I thought “he hasn’t seen the bike!” But nothing I could do to prevent what was coming. When he got out the van he simply said he hadn’t seen her.
