Vangaurd

I didnt like it, but then im quite a fussy mmo gamer. I blame UO! :D

If you liked EQ, then you should check out LoTR, it runs a lot better and looks better. Again not my style of game due to the lack of pvp. :o

Open beta for LotR is due shortly. They have the rights to make games based on the books rather than the movies.

Been trying to download the enormous vanguard client all weekend. Most of my clan love it, they were avid EQ1 players and say it's what EQ2 should have been.

Vanguard has very high spec requirements at the moment due to the sheer ammount of scenery in the landscapes, my 3500 AMD64 and 6600GT 1GB RAM couldn't cope at all.

I personally think that Vanguard is a better game than EQ2, and it defiantly has a lot more potential. It's not really for the casual gamer and you won't have people getting to the highest level in a week. There are some very nice ideas in the game that other MMOs have not done a huge amount with, graphically it's demanding, my 6800GT, 1Gb RAM 3500+ can only play it well in highest performance.

That said I'm sure lots of people will play Vanguard and put it down almost as quickly, my personal opinion is give Vanguard 6-12months and it will be brilliant, it is not really ready for release and they are rushing it out to compete with the WoW expansion.

Maybe try to download the beta and give it a go.

I would not touch with a very long stick any game SOE have the licence for. The best MMO i have ever played and still have played was SWG CU. I think we all know what happened after CU! NGE

I thought CU was a disaster when i 1st played it and as the game went on it was uber, the best version of SWG ever. Creature handler finally got the works and smuggerler was just round the corner. The groups, community, economy and most importantly the starwars story which was your own!

Sad really.

My next game is lord of the rings. Its uber

Stay away from evil smedley and SOE, they couldnt organise a **** up in a brewery!

Look at all the game blunders they have under their belt, game which were good. Planet Side, EQ, EQ2, Matrix and now vangurd. You watch they will turn this game into mush. Its what SOE do best after buying a game from the little company.

Sorry totally gone off one there.

lol

SOE have nothing to do with the development of the game. They publish it only. Their loader/server/support system is one of the best out there.

Finally got to have a play around with it last night, and holy crap, it's unfinished

Bearing in mind that it's only two weeks from release, it's in an awful state. It's riddled with bugs, broken quests, crashes and graphics glitches. There are huge chunks of content missing, and a lot of what's in there looks like it was thrown together in a huge hurry.

You can kind of see the potential behind it all, but it's not going to change significantly with two weeks of work, and people are going to drop it like a hot coal. You just can't get away with releasing an mmorpg in that state anymore, not post-WoW.

My computer runs Vanguard very well, even at the highest detail levels, and there's no denying that its a great looking game. The problem is that the game is so lacking in content I couldn't find any hook that made me want to keep playing. One of it's strengths, however, is character creation. There are a great number of visual options to tweak, and a large number of race/class combinations (although this could itself present a balance issue).

I like how the world is seamless (no zone loading), and if you wanted to you could run across the continent exploring. The problem is that the content is so lacking that there is no reason for you to do this currently. I fear that SOE in time-old tradition are forcing this game out too early.

I quite enjoy playing it. Admittedly my computer is well out of date so struggles for any sort of decent performance but the core of the game (crafting/adventuring/exploring) does seem to be in place for making this a worthwhile game. Like mentioned it is still quite an empty world but I believe Brad has mentioned the release team will be staying on for another two or three months to complete the missing features before they are split into expansion teams so hopefully they should be able to get it to release standard in this time. I say that but that's what Turbine said about Asherons Call 2. It's not the sort of game that the majority are going to 24/7 grind through so if they can focus their work on the needed areas I've got high hopes.

I went into this looking for something to replace my EQ addiction, and from what I've seen I'm more than ready to put my time in.

I agree it is a great looking game, I never played WoW so I do not have to see cartoon graphics in a MMORPG to think it looks good. Also Id suggest if u have not upgraded your PC in the last year and want to find a game that runs well on normal settings u look elsewhere (however I could add 40fps to make 70fps using lowest detail).

This game has more content than SWG had when it started, with the later expansion packs did they start adding quests above the "mission terminals". You can lvl your character using quests, up to the point I got to.

My first MMORPG was SWG so I expect to have a vast explorable world and an open sandbox style, with player driven economies and combat not being the only skill ingame. Crafting in SWG was one of the best examples of how it should be done, and Ive no doubt that Vanguard's system is equally complex (from what Ive heard it even has a twist that the final product depends on "failures" and your skill and materials to fix them).

You played it for 1 night and found all these problems? Ive lvled a character up to 10, and I have encountered a grand total of 1 broken quest, which was the only broken quest i heard discussed in area chat. Its now been fixed for a couple of days.

What huge chunks are missing? In game chunks are meant to mean areas which are run on a certain server from what I can work out. You seem to be refering to content when using the word "chunk". How can "huge chunks" of content be missing when you have played 1 night? You must be a better beta tester than me if u can find all these problems.

Im just glad they didnt copy the UI targeting system from SWG : NGE, which is a complete mystery as to why there are 2 or more target cursors.

There are combat, diplomacy and crafting areas of skills and Ive just tested combat.

Its been discussed here too:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17669578

As far as broken quests go, quests are not mandatory and you can choose to abandon any quest. Therefore singular broken quest is not a game stopper. Some quests take the form of an "adventure game", where the objective is not handed to you on a plate and must be "discovered"; which could lead some impatient types to claim a quest is broken.

After playing City of Villains its nice to play a game which isnt confined to just the lvling of combat toons. Another problem with City of Villains is the almost non-existant end game content. I cant compare Vanguard for end game content unfortunately being only lv10.

Well thanks for the thoughts and comments, i think i will wait 12 months before looking at this (as i did with eq2) it should be worth the wait.

As for people saying there is missing content if tis a beta wont they be holding some things back? (or am i missing something)

As for LotR being based on *** books rather than the films i must say thank god :) the films were good but the books have far more in them.

Thanks again
Zero.

dont you know? its cool to bash big companies :p

Tried a different starting area last night, and had a much more positive experience. I suppose 'huge chunks' is a bit of an exaggeration, but some starting areas are definitely much more complete than others. The first one I tried just dumps you beside a guard in the middle of a village with absolutely no explanation of where you are or what kind of place you're in.

Still getting a lot of visual bugs, but the servers were a lot more stable and they seem to be fixing an impressive number of bugs with each daily patch.

The lanscape is gorgeous too, and some of the classes very interesting. Maybe there's hope yet :)

Basically, the game is incomplete and not ready for release imo. After a solid week of playing Vanguard beta it has good potential but just....incomplete.

Give it 6 months maybe. EQII has matured nicely after a dodgy start, so maybe Vanguard will do the same. I'm going back to EQII for the time being, and will wait and see what transpires.

Someone mentioned the cartoonish graphics in WoW. I've never been a big fan of that game but I have to say they did an awesome job on the graphics, in conveying atmosphere to the different areas. It just shows that cutting edge graphics (ala photoreal, HDR, etc) doesn't nesessarily equal the best experience. It all comes down to implementation.

I agree, I hadnt played Wow for ages because the graphics looked a bit naff. Ive recently been persuaded to try it and im loving it, the graphics in motion look a lot better than the screenshots and have a certain charm to them with i didnt find in vanguard.

i think i will try another starting area though as im guessing i picked a bad one.
